The University of Louisville Research Foundation is organized for the purpose of promoting and supporting research projects, investigations, clinical services, and other activities relating to the missions of the University of Louisville.
The University of Louisville Research Foundation houses financial activity related to services provided by the UofL Health Sciences Center and over 1,100 physician faculty within the University's School of Medicine. The faculty at the School of Medicine staff 250 clinics over a multi-state region and provided the following services in FY20: - Over 52,000 COVID tests; - Over 22,000 telehealth visits serving the region; - Over 720,000 patient visits; - Over 80,000 new patients added to our clinics; and - 68 new providers to serve the region.
The University of Louisville Research Foundation secured nearly $170 million to support groundbreaking research in the 2019-2020 fiscal year. This was the organizations most successful year ever for competitively funded research and an increase of nearly $18 million over the previous record year. The organization received 882 awards for $169.5 million, which included $95.4 million from the federal government, $23.8 million federal flow through, $21.2 million from industry, $12.8 million from foundations, and $10.7 million from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Not only does the organization and the university it supports excel at groundbreaking research, but they translate that research into marketable commercial technologies with real-world impact. The University of Louisville is the only university in the country to be awarded a prestigious suite of commercialization grants, dubbed the 'superfecta': 1) The Coulter Translational Partnership award; 2) NSF I Corps Site program; 3) the NIH Reach Hub; and 4) the NSF AWARE:ACCESS award. These programs help get our innovative technologies to market, improving the way we work and live. Below are some examples of how funding supports both basic and applied research: -Funds support pioneering research regarding spinal cord injuries and how the paralyzed may be able to walk again. -Our Louisville Entrepreneurship Acceleration Partnership supports the local economy through innovation opportunities throughout the region. -Funds were used to help build a program that will prepare students for the ever-evolving, technology-enabled "jobs of tomorrow". This will create apprenticeships that connect what students learn in the class with their eventual careers. -Funds were used for research and testing vaccines as a Pfizer Vaccines Center of Excellence and developing next-generation manufacturing technology. - Alcohol Research Center: This research center investigates the mechanisms of alcohol-induced organ injury and works to develop new methods of prevention and treatment. -Conn Center for Renewable Energy on Research: Concentrates on research into rare earth oxides as photovoltaics, which could provide a new, clean source of fuel and improve its storage.
The University of Louisville Research Foundation provides funding for student scholarships at the University of Louisville. In FY20, the organization provided over $53 million in funds to nearly 12,000 students at the University.
