MANY EXISTING PHYSICIAN PRACTICES EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT GROWTH DURING THE YEAR: PEDIATRICS (87% VOLUME INCREASE), SURGICAL ONCOLOGY (105% VOLUME INCREASE), PULMONOLOGY (12% VOLUME INCREASE), MEDICAL ONCOLOGY (16% VOLUME INCREASE), UROLOGY (7% VOLUME INCREASE), AND ORTHOPEDICS (10% VOLUME INCREASE). THE NEW PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE LOCATIONS IN PIKEVILLE, PRESTONSBURG, AND SOUTH WILLIAMSON, KY RECORDED 4,575 PATIENT VISITS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR.PMC STRIVES TO ENSURE THERE IS ADEQUATE AVAILABILITY AND ACCESS TO PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS FOR THE RURAL REGION IN WHICH IT SERVES AND IS A FOUNDING MEMBER OF THE APPALACHIAN OSTEOPATHIC POST GRADUATE TRAINING CONSORTIUM. TO PROMOTE THE EDUCATION OF PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS, PMC OPERATES THE ONLY INTEGRATED OSTEOPATHIC FAMILY MEDICINE AND MANIPULATIVE TREATMENT/ NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN KENTUCKY, THE ONLY PLUS-ONE NEUROMUSCULOSKELETAL AND OSTEOPATHIC MANIPULATIVE MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN KENTUCKY, AND ONE OF ONLY SIX FAMILY MEDICINE AND OSTEOPATHIC MANIPULATIVE TREATMENT MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAMS IN KENTUCKY. PMC'S RESIDENCY PROGRAM TRAINED 16 RESIDENTS DURING THE 2018-2019 PROGRAM YEAR. CONSTRUCTION ON THE NEW PMC PRIMARY CARE AND URGENT CARE CLINIC LOCATED IN PRESTONSBURG, KY WAS FINALIZED AT A CAPITAL INVESTMENT OF $2.0M. THIS FIRST URGENT CARE ENDEAVOR FOR PMC FURTHER ADVANCED ACCESS TO BOTH PRIMARY AND URGENT CARE SERVICES FOR THE RESIDENTS OF FLOYD COUNTY AND THE SURROUNDING AREA. THE FIRST PHASE OF THE NEW PMC PRIMARY AND SPECIALTY CLINIC LOCATED IN THE SOUTH SIDE MALL, SOUTH WILLIAMSON, KY OPENED DURING FY 2019. THE NEW LOCATION WILL OCCUPY APPROXIMATELY 20,000 SQUARE FEET OF SPACE, PROVIDING A MODERN, CONVENIENT, AND COMFORTABLE LOCATION WITH INCREASED OPTIONS FOR PRIMARY CARE IN ADDITION TO MORE SPECIALIZED MEDICAL SERVICES TO RESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH WILLIAMSON, KY COMMUNITY, IN ADDITION TO THOSE RESIDENTS OF NEIGHBORING MINGO COUNTY, WV. THE RENOVATION COST FOR PHASE ONE TOTALED $910,000. TWO NEW PMC PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE LOCATIONS OPENED IN PIKEVILLE, KY DURING FY 2019, PROVIDING CONVENIENT ACCESS TO FOUR PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS ON PMC'S MAIN CAMPUS, RENOVATION COSTS FOR THE PIKEVILLE PRIMARY CARE LOCATIONS TOTALED $633,444.THE CONTINUED EXPANSION OF PIKEVILLE MEDICAL CENTER'S TERTIARY CARE SPECIALTY CAPABILITIES, INCLUDING TRAUMA SERVICES, CARDIAC SERVICES, ONCOLOGY SERVICES, AND NEUROSURGERY SERVICES HAS RESULTED IN FEWER PATIENTS BEING TRANSFERRED OUT OF PMC TO LARGER HOSPITALS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE REGION.
IMAGING SERVICES:PIKEVILLE MEDICAL CENTER IS CONTINUALLY INVESTING IN TECHNOLOGY OF THE HIGHEST LEVEL WITHIN THE IMAGING SERVICES DIVISION TO DETECT AND TREAT DISEASES EARLIER, WHILE PROVIDING QUALITY DIAGNOSTIC AND INTERVENTIONAL SERVICES IN A COMPASSIONATE AND EFFICIENT MANNER. PMC'S IMAGING MODALITIES OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE, MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI), COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT), POSITRON EMISSION TOMOGRAPHY (PET), AND MAMMOGRAPHY HAVE RECEIVED THREE-YEAR ACCREDITATION FROM THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RADIOLOGY, RECOGNIZED AS THE GOLD STANDARD IN DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING.PMC'S RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT IS DIGITALLY ACCREDITED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR OCCUPATION SAFETY AND HEALTH (NIOSH) AND CONTINUALLY WORKS TO PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE CARE TO THE COAL MINING POPULATION OF EASTERN KENTUCKY. TWO DEDICATED BLACK LUNG EXAM ROOMS ARE LOCATED ON THE MAIN CAMPUS OF PMC ALLOWING FOR EIGHT TO TEN PATIENTS TO BE SCHEDULED PER EXAM DAY. WITH ONE OF ONLY ELEVEN PHYSICIANS CERTIFIED BY NIOSH IN THE STATE OF KENTUCKY PROVIDING BLACK LUNG SCREEN READING SERVICES TO PMC PATIENTS, THE TURNAROUND TIME ON TEST RESULTS IS LESS THAN 16 HOURS FOR FINAL REPORT RESULTS. THE INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY (IR) DEPARTMENT AT PMC SPECIALIZES IN MINIMALLY INVASIVE, IMAGE-GUIDED PROCEDURES THAT DIAGNOSE AND TREAT DISEASES IN MOST EVERY ORGAN SYSTEM IN THE BODY. PATIENTS FROM ACROSS THE REGION ARE REFERRED TO PMC'S IR DEPARTMENT TO RECEIVE THE MOST ADVANCED TREATMENT AND SPECIALIZED PROCEDURES WITHIN THE RECENTLY RENOVATED SPACE THAT CONTAINS THREE IR SUITES, NINE PRE-OPERATIVE AND POST-OPERATIVE BAYS, TWO OUTPATIENT ROOMS AND A CENTRAL NURSE'S STATION. THE RENOVATION OF 3,328 SQUARE FEET OF SPACE TO HOUSE THE 3RD IR SUITE WAS COMPLETED DURING FY 19 AT A COST OF $1,519,024.THE STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY CURRENTLY UTILIZED WITHIN IMAGING SERVICES INCLUDES TWO LINEAR ACCELERATORS, ONE 32-SLICE LARGE BORE CT SCANNER, TWO 64-SLICE CT SCANNERS, TWO DUAL-SOURCE 128-SLICE CT SCANNERS, A PET/CT SCANNER, A SPECT/CT SCANNER, TWO 1.5T OPEN MRIS, A 3.0T OPEN MRI, A D-SPECT CARDIAC IMAGING SYSTEM, AND THREE FULLY EQUIPPED INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY SUITES.PMC PURCHASED TWO HOLOGIC SELENIA 3D MAMMOGRAPHY SYSTEMS DURING FY 2019 AT A COST OF $784,470. THIS REVOLUTIONARY SCREENING AND DIAGNOSTIC BREAST IMAGING EQUIPMENT IS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE EARLY DEECTION OF BREAST CANCER BY PROVIDING SHARPER 3D IMAGES AND SMARTER TECHNOLOGY TO FIND INVASIVE CANCERS REGARDLESS OF PATIENT AGE. A GE OEC ELITE CFD DIGITAL MOBILE ERGO C-ARM WITH VASCULAR PLATFORM WAS PURCHASED DURING FY 2019. THE ERGO IS CONSIDERED THE FUTURE OF MOBILE SURGICAL IMAGING AND IS SUITED FOR A RANGE OF SURGICAL APPLICATIONS INCLUDING VASCULAR, ORTHOPEDICS, NEUROLOGIC AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES. THE EQUIPMENT COST $231,183 AND PROVIDES STUNNING IMAGE QUALITY AT A LOW RADIATION DOSE WITH MORE DETAILED ANATOMY REGARDLESS OF PATIENT DENSITY.
CARDIAC SERVICES:PIKEVILLE MEDICAL CENTER (PMC) IS RECOGNIZED AS HAVING ONE OF THE TOP HEART PROGRAMS IN KENTUCKY. THE PMC HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE IS A COMPREHENSIVE HEART AND VASCULAR PROGRAM FOR THE REGION, PROVIDING A FULL RANGE OF CARDIAC SERVICES AND PERFORMING ADVANCED CARDIAC PROCEDURES LOCALLY TO SERVE OUR PATIENTS THROUGHOUT THE CONTINUUM OF CARE. CARDIAC SERVICES OFFERED BY PMC INCLUDE GENERAL CARDIOLOGY, INVASIVE CARDIOLOGY, INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY, ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, CARDIOTHORACIC SURGERY, VASCULAR SURGERY, ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY AND CARDIAC REHABILITATION.PMC HAS BEEN NAMED ONE OF THE TOP 100 HOSPITALS IN THE NATION IN PATIENT SAFETY FOR HEART ATTACK TREATMENT BY CARECHEX (R). THIS RANKING COMPARES CLINICAL QUALITY, PATIENT SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE OF NEARLY ALL ACUTE CARE HOSPITALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY PROVIDING THIS LIFE-SAVING SERVICE. PMC ALSO RECEIVED THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY'S NCDR CHEST PAIN-MI REGISTRY PLATINUM PERFORMANCE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR 2019. THIS HONOR RECOGNIZES THE PMC HEART INSTITUTE'S COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING A HIGH LEVEL OF CARE FOR HEART ATTACK PATIENTS THROUGH DEMONSTRATION OF SUSTAINED ACHIEVEMENT IN QUALITY CARDIAC CARE. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO INCLUDE CONSTRUCTION OF THREE ADDITIONAL EP/CATH LABS, TWO OF WHICH WILL BE HYBRID LABS, WHICH ALLOW THE ROOMS TO BE QUICKLY CONVERTED INTO SURGICAL SUITES IF THE PATIENT'S CONDITION REQUIRES. IN ADDITION, THE RENOVATED SPACE WILL HOUSE SIX PRE/POST-OPERATIVE BAYS ALONG WITH A MULTIPURPOSE ROOM FOR CASE CONFERENCES.THE PMC HEART & VASCULAR INSTITUTE TEAM WORKS CONTINUOUSLY TO BRING THE MOST ADVANCED TREATMENT OPTIONS TO THE REGION. DURING FY 2019 PMC WAS SELECTED TO BECOME ONE OF ONLY FIVE HOSPITALS IN KENTUCKY TO IMPLANT THE WATCHMAN DEVICE, A NEW TREATMENT DESIGNED FOR PATIENTS WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (AFIB). MORE THAN 70 WATCHMAN DEVICE PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN PERFORMED AT PMC TO DATE, PLACING THE MEDICAL CENTER IN THE TOP 30 PERCENT OF HOSPITALS IN THE MIDWEST THAT PERFORM THE PROCEDURE. IN ADDITION, THE HEART AND VASCULAR INSTITUTE RECENTLY DELIVERED THE REGION'S FIRST TAVR, A MINIMALLY INVASIVE TRANS-AORTIC VALVE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE TO REPAIR THE VALVE WITHOUT REMOVING THE OLD, DAMAGED VALVE; KENTUCKY'S FIRST TATCICATH CONTACT FORCE ABLATION CATHETER FOR AFIB; AND IS ONE OF THE FIRST HOSPITALS IN THE NATION TO IMPLANT THE MICRA LEADLESS PACEMAKER TO REDUCE THE AFIB PATIENT'S RISK OF STROKE AND HEART ATTACK.
