SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON PRESENTS CLASSICAL CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERTS, OF THE HIGHEST ARTISTIC STANDARDS, IN HOMELESS SHELTERS AND OTHER SHELTERING ENVIRONMENTS.
IN THE FACE OF CIRCUMSTANCES THAT HAVE DEVASTATED MANY ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON (SMB) CONSIDERS IT A MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENT TO CONTINUE MAKING MUSIC AVAILABLE TO OUR AUDIENCES AND TO KEEP OUR PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS WORKING THROUGHOUT THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. IN LIGHT OF SHUTDOWNS AND CHANGES TO PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICES STARTING IN MARCH OF 2020, OUR MUSICIANS HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO PERFORM LIVE IN-PERSON FOR OUR AUDIENCES SINCE FEBRUARY 2020. SHELTER MUSIC BOSTON SHIFTED OUR PROGRAMMING TO ENTIRELY VIRTUAL AND DIGITAL CONCERTS UNTIL IT IS SAFE TO RETURN TO THE SHELTERS, RECOVERY CENTERS, AND THE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM THAT WE SERVE. IN 2020, AS A RESULT, SMB PRODUCED 8 CONCERT VIDEOS FOR OUR ADULT AUDIENCES, 6 INTERACTIVE CONCERT VIDEOS FOR OUR CHILDREN'S PROGRAM, AND 6 LIVE VIRTUAL INTERACTIVE MUSIC SESSIONS FOR THE CHILDREN WE SERVE. ADDITIONALLY, A NUMBER OF OUR MUSICIANS CREATED SOLO CONCERT VIDEOS FOR BOSTON HOPE, THE FIELD HOSPITAL FOR HOUSED AND HOMELESS PATIENTS RECOVERING FROM CORONAVIRUS.SMB EXPANDED THE REACH OF OUR PROGRAM IN 2020 BY SHARING OUR MONTHLY CONCERT VIDEOS WITH MORE THAN 20 ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT GREATER BOSTON AND BEYOND. WE WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THE FINANCIAL CAPACITY TO PERFORM LIVE FOR ALL OF THESE ADDITIONAL SITES. OUR CONCERTS FEATUREDA VARIETY OF ENSEMBLES AND REPERTOIRE BY THE FOLLOWING COMPOSERS: J.S. BACH, LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN, SAMUEL COLERIDGE-TAYLOR, SCOTT JOPLIN, DAVE RIMELIS, SYDNEY GUILLAUME, MARI ESABEL VALVERDE, MAX REGER,AND SO MANY MORE. ASIDE FROM PROVIDING ONGOING CONCERT EXPERIENCES, SMB HAS BEEN FOCUSED ON ADVANCING OUR ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING AND GROWING OUR ORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY. BEYOND KEEPING OUR CONCERTS GOING IN 2020 THROUGH THE PANDEMIC, SMB ESTABLISHED OUR FIRST EVER STRATEGIC PLAN, ADDED 4 NEW BOARD MEMBERS, AND PROVIDED A 4-PART ONLINE TRAINING SERIES FOR OUR TEAM ON TRAUMA, SUBSTANCE USE, AND SELF-CARE.
