THE ALBERT SCHWEITZER FELLOWSHIP (ASF) IS PREPARING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PROFESSIONALS TO SERVE AND EMPOWER VULNERABLE PEOPLE TO LIVE HEALTHIER LIVES AND CREATE HEALTHIER COMMUNITIES, AND TO BECOME THEREBY, A GLOBAL CORPS OF CHANGE-AGENT LEADERS
US FELLOWS COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICE PROGRAM - THROUGH THE SCHWEITZER MENTORED LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, SCHWEITZER FELLOWS PROVIDED APPROXIMATELY 40,000 HOURS OF SERVICE TO HELP AND EMPOWER MORE THAN 20,000 PEOPLE TO LIVE HEALTHIER LIVES. OVER THE PAST YEAR THEY WORKED IN OVER 150 COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN 14 LOCATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. DURING THEIR FELLOWSHIP YEAR, THE FELLOWS GAINED VALUABLE EXPERIENCES THAT ENHANCED THEIR CAPACITY FOR LIFELONG WORK WITH VULNERABLE AND UNDERSERVED PEOPLE IN COMMUNITY SETTINGS FELLOWS' SKILLS WERE SHARPENED, THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPACT OF THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH SUCH AS POVERTY, EDUCATION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT WAS EXPANDED, AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO HEALTH EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE WAS DEEPENED.
OTHER GEOGRAPHIC LOCATIONS/AFFILIATES - THROUGH OUR AFFILIATE AGREEMENT, ORGANIZATIONS WITH INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT STATUS MAY ADMINISTER THE US SCHWEITZER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM ENJOYING THE SAME RIGHTS, RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES AS THOSE PROGRAMS ADMINISTERED THROUGH THE SCHWEITZER NATIONAL OFFICE.
LAMBARENE, GABON, AFRICA - LAUNCHED IN 1979, THIS PROGRAM SENDS SENIOR US MEDICAL STUDENTS TO THE ABLERT SCHWEITZER HOSPITAL IN LAMBARENE, GABON, EACH OF WHOM SPENDS THREE MONTHS PROVIDING MEDICAL CARE TO PATIENTS AT THE HOSPITAL AND IN SURROUNDING VILLAGES. IN 2007, ASF EXPANDED THE PROGRAM TO INCLUDE INDIVIDUALS TRAINED IN PUBLIC HEALTH TO HELP THE HOSPITAL EXPAND ITS PREVENTION AND PUBLIC HEALTH OUTREACH BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL HOSPITAL-CENTERED ACUTE CARE.
