TO IMPROVE MATHEMATICS LITERACY

COACHING/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:MATHPOWER COACHES AND STAFF PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED WORKSHOPS TO ASSIST TEACHERS AND OST PROVIDERS IN ADDRESSING SPECIFIC MATHEMATICS TOPICS IN GRADES PRE K-8/9(ALGEBRA I) USING THE COMMON CORE STATE MATHEMATICS STANDARDS AS A FRAMEWORK. A MAJOR TASK FOR OUR MATH COACHES TO UNDERTAKE IS HELPING EDUCATORS AND OST PROVIDERS UNDERSTAND THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS. THE NEW COMMON CORE MATHEMATICS STANDARDS HAVE PRODUCED A CHANGE IN THE FOCUS OF MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION. OUR COACHING FOCUSES ON MAJOR STRANDS OF THE COMMON CORE AND PROVIDES PARTICIPANTS WITH EXPOSURE TO THE NEW STRATEGIES AND APPROACHES THAT WILL ENHANCE MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION AT OST PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE THE STAFF WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO SUPPORT SCHOOL-BASED MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION.

ALGEBRA PLUS SUMMER ACADEMY:OUR ALGEBRA PLUS SUMMER ACADEMY (SA) IS A FIVE-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM TAKING PLACE ON THE CAMPUS OF NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY. IT SERVES APPROXIMATELY 225 STUDENTS GOING INTO 6TH THROUGH 10TH GRADES. STUDENTS TAKE A MORNING MATH CLASS USING A PROJECT-BASED APPROACH AND FOCUSED ON REMEDIATION OF MATERIAL FROM THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR AND ENRICHMENT THROUGH PREVIEWING STANDARDS THAT WILL BE TAUGHT IN THE UPCOMING YEAR. CLASSES ARE TAUGHT BY CERTIFIED MATH TEACHERS AND SUPPORTED BY COLLEGE-AGED TEACHING ASSISTANTS (TA). IN THE AFTERNOON, STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SERVICE-LEARNING PROJECTS AND CLUBS WITH A STEM FOCUS.

MATH*STARS:MATH*STARS IS AN EXTENSION OF OUR SUMMER ACADEMY AND TAKES PLACE DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. WE PARTNER WITH BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS (BPS) AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE HOMEWORK SUPPORT AND INSTRUCTION IN MATH SKILLS TO APPROXIMATELY 350 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS USING SIMILAR METHODS AS OUR SUMMER ACADEMY. WE ALSO ASSESS OUR STUDENTS TO FIND OUT THEIR WEAKNESSES SO WE CAN DEVELOP PERSONAL LEARNING PLANS (PLP) FOR THEM TO USE THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR. MATH*STARS CREATES A BRIDGE BETWEEN STUDENTS' SCHOOL DAY AND THEIR OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME BY PROVIDING A RICH AND PERSONALIZED EXPERIENCE, SUPPORTED BY COLLEGE STUDENTS SERVING AS TUTOR-MENTORS TO THE STUDENTS.
