Organizations Filed Purposes: DISCOVERING JUSTICE IS EMPOWERING A RISING GENERATION OF LEADERS THROUGH AN INNOVATIVE CIVICS CURRICULUM AND PROGRAMS WHICH UTILIZE COURTROOMS AND CLASSROOMS AS CIVIC SPACES - ENCOURAGING EMPATHY, VOICE, AND AGENCY IN K-8 STUDENTS AND OTHERS ACROSS MASSACHUSETTS.

UTILIZING COURTROOMS AND CLASSROOMS AS CIVIC SPACES, WE EMPOWER A RISING GENERATION.

CHILDREN DISCOVERING JUSTICE: CHILDREN DISCOVERING JUSTICE (CDJ) IS A K-8 EXPERIENTIAL, LITERACY-BASED SOCIAL STUDIES AND CIVICS CURRICULUM THAT GRANTS STUDENTS A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF DEMOCRACY. THROUGH THE USE OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE, INFORMATIONAL TEXTS, PRIMARY SOURCE DOCUMENTS, AND ENGAGING PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES, CHILDREN DISCOVERING JUSTICE PROVIDES STUDENTS WITH TOOLS TO EXPLORE THE PRINCIPLES OF OUR DEMOCRACY AND UNDERSTAND THEIR ROLE IN PARTICIPATORY, CONSTRUCTIVE CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. IN FY20, THE NEWEST EDITION OF CDJ, FULLY ALIGNED WITH THE 2018 MASSACHUSETTS HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE STANDARDS WAS MADE AVAILABLE TO EVERY CLASSROOM ACROSS THE COMMONWEALTH.IT IS OUR GOAL TO MOVE CLASSROOMS BEYOND PRIMARILY CONTENT-BASED CIVICS COURSES IN ORDER TO FOSTER ACTIVE DEMOCRATIC CITIZENSHIP BEYOND CLASSROOM WALLS. AS A COMPLEMENT TO OUR CDJ CURRICULUM, DISCOVERING JUSTICE OFFERS AN INTERACTIVE MOCK TRIAL OR MOCK APPEAL FOR STUDENTS AT EACH GRADE LEVEL IN GRADES K-8. IN REAL COURTROOMS, IN CLASSROOMS, OR ONLINE, STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GRAPPLE WITH LEGAL AND SOCIAL ISSUES BY LITIGATING REAL AND IMAGINED COURT CASES. IN FY20, DISCOVERING JUSTICE WELCOMED STUDENTS TO THE MOAKLEY U.S. COURTHOUSE FOR FIELD TRIPS AND ALSO MADE THIS EXPERIENCE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS ONLINE.

MOCK TRIAL AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: THE MOCK TRIAL PROGRAM, OFFERED YEAR-ROUND, IS AN 11-WEEK EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM DURING WHICH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS BECOME TRIAL LAWYERS. GUIDED BY VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS, STUDENTS TACKLE AGE-APPROPRIATE LEGAL ISSUES, ENGAGE IN LEGAL ANALYSIS, AND ULTIMATELY TRY CASES IN REAL COURTROOMS BEFORE FEDERAL OR STATE JUDGES AND JURIES MADE UP OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS. IN FY20 THIS PROGRAM WAS OFFERED TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN BOSTON, LAWRENCE, LOWELL, SOMERVILLE, SPRINGFIELD, AND MARLBOROUGH.

STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM: OUR MOCK APPELLATE PROGRAM TRANSFORMS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS INTO APPELLATE LAWYERS AS THEY DELVE INTO THE BILL OF RIGHTS AND EXPLORE HOW CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTIONS APPLY IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. OVER THE COURSE OF 11 WEEKS, STUDENTS TAKE THEIR CASES THROUGH THE APPEALS PROCESS AND PREPARE DETAILED ARGUMENTS TO BE PRESENTED BEFORE A JUDICIAL PANEL. UNDER THE MENTORSHIP OF VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS, STUDENTS BECOME CRITICAL THINKERS, PERSUASIVE SPEAKERS, AND SKILLED ADVOCATES, DEVELOPING SKILLS THAT HELP THEM TO BE COLLEGE, CAREER, AND CIVIC READY. IN FY20, THIS PROGRAM WAS OFFERED TO STUDENTS FROM BOSTON AND SOMERVILLE.
