MASS INSIGHT EDUCATION AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, INC.'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE LEADERSHIP IN CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT AND OPPORTUNITY GAPS FOR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS BY FOCUSING ON SYSTEM TRANSFORMATION AND STUDENT ACADEMIC SUCCESS.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) STEM & ENGLISH PROGRAM. OUR AP STEM & ENGLISH PROGRAM IS A PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP TO INCREASE THE PARTICIPATION AND PERFORMANCE OF BLACK, LATINO, AND LOW-INCOME HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN RIGOROUS COURSEWORK AND PREPARE STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS. THIS PROGRAM IS DISTINGUISHED BY THE DEPTH AND BREADTH OF ITS PROGRAM COMPONENTS, ITS SCALE, AND ITS HISTORY OF IMPACT. THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR MARKED THE ELEVENTH YEAR OF THE PROGRAM IN WHICH WE PROVIDED SCHOOL AND DISTRICT SUPPORTS, TEACHER TRAINING, COACHING AND CLASSROOM SUPPORTS, AND DIRECT STUDENT SUPPORTS RANGING FROM OUT OF CLASSROOM LEARNING TIME TO EXAM FEE SUBSIDIES FOR LOW INCOME STUDENTS. WE PARTNERED WITH OVER 80 HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS MASSACHUSETTS AND ADDITIONAL HIGH SCHOOLS IN RHODE ISLAND AND CONNECTICUT DELIVERING OUR AP STEM & ENGLISH PROGRAM AND SERVED APPROXIMATELY 10,000 STUDENTS. THE PROGRAM IS THE LARGEST SECONDARY EDUCATION STEM PROGRAM IN MASSACHUSETTS. STUDENT OUTCOMES IN PARTNER SCHOOLS TELL THE STORY OF OUR TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT, INCLUDING SIGNIFICANT INCREASES IN AP EXAMS TAKEN AND ATTAINMENT SCORES OF 3 OR BETTER ON A SCALE OF 1 - 5 "QUALIFYING SCORE" - INCREASES OF 99% AND 87%, RESPECTIVELY. THESE OUTCOMES ARE AMPLIFIED FOR BLACK AND LATINO STUDENTS (INCREASES IN EXAMS TAKEN AND QUALIFYING SCORES OF 99% AND 129%, RESPECTIVELY), AND LOW-INCOME STUDENTS (INCREASES IN EXAMS TAKEN AND QUALIFYING SCORES OF 128% AND 173%, RESPECTIVELY). IN FEBRUARY 2020, FOR THE FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW, MASSACHUSETTS HAD MORE GRADUATING SENIORS RECEIVING QUALIFYING AP EXAM SCORES THAN ANY OTHER STATE IN THE NATION. IN ITS INDEPENDENT RELEASE OF THAT INFORMATION, THE COLLEGE BOARD IDENTIFIED MASS INSIGHT AS A KEY CONTRIBUTOR TO THAT ACCOMPLISHMENT. THE MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION CITED MASS INSIGHT FOR ITS ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON BEHALF OF MINORITY AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS.
SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT. OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAM WORKS WITH SCHOOLS, DISTRICTS, AND STATE EDUCATION AGENCIES NATIONWIDE. OUR SUPPORT TO PARTNERS INCLUDES DIAGNOSTICS, STRATEGIC PLANNING, AND IMPLEMENTATION SUPPORT. WE ALSO FACILITATE NETWORKS TO ADVANCE THINKING AND BEST PRACTICES RELATED TO SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT. IN ALL ENGAGEMENTS, MASS INSIGHT SEEKS TO SUSTAINABLY BUILD THE CAPACITY OF LOCAL LEADERS. DURING THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR OUR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT TEAM CONDUCTED EQUITY AUDITS, HELPED DISTRICTS RESPOND TO COVID-19, IMPROVED DISTRICT CAPACITY FOR INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING, FACILITATED NON-EVALUATIVE SCHOOL ASSESSMENTS HELPING DISTRICTS AND STATE EDUCATIONAL AGENCIES UNDERSTAND STRENGTHS AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT IN THEIR SUPPORT OF SCHOOLS, AND ASSISTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF IMPROVEMENT STRATEGIES. WE ALSO WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION TO DEVELOP A NETWORK-BASED APPROACH FOR IMPROVING ENROLLMENT AND SUCCESS IN ADVANCED ACADEMICS AMONG BLACK, LATINO, AND LOW-INCOME STUDENTS. TOGETHER, THESE EFFORTS ENGAGED 11 PARTNERS SERVING 4,632 SCHOOLS AND 3,037,065 STUDENTS. WHILE MANY OF THESE PARTNERSHIPS WERE NEW IN 2019-2020, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH SOME PARTNERS FOR MORE THAN FIVE YEARS. IN ONE SUCH DISTRICT, STUDENT PERFORMANCE HAS OUTPACED ALL OTHER SIMILARLY SITUATED DISTRICTS (I.E. SIZE, DEMOGRAPHICS) IN THE STATE AND RISEN A FULL LETTER GRADE ON THE STATE'S ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM. IN ANOTHER DISTRICT, HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION RATES IN TARGET SCHOOLS WERE LOWER THAN THE DISTRICT AVERAGE AT THE START OF THE DISTRICT'S PARTNERSHIP WITH MASS INSIGHT; AFTER THREE YEARS OF INTENSIVE SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT SUPPORT, THEY ARE AMONG THE HIGHEST IN THE DISTRICT.
