Organizations Filed Purposes: NEHI IS AN INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO TRANSFORMING HEALTH CARE FOR THE BENEFIT OF PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH MEMBERS FROM ALL ACROSS THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM, NEHI CONDUCTS EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH AND STIMULATES POLICY CHANGE TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY, SAFETY AND AFFORDABILITY OF HEALTH CARE. TOGETHER WITH THIS UNPARALLELED NETWORK OF COMMITTED HEALTH CARE LEADERS, NEHI BRINGS AN OBJECTIVE, COLLABORATIVE AND FRESH VOICE TO HEALTH POLICY.

NEXT GENERATION VALUE-BASED ARRANGEMENTS AND THE STAKES FOR PATIENTS:THIS PROJECT WAS INITIATED IN FALL 2019 WITH SPONSORSHIP FUNDING FROM ELI LILLY & COMPANY. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT WAS TO IDENTIFY THE IMPLICATIONS OF VALUE-BASED ARRANGEMENTS (SUCH AS OUTCOMES-BASED CONTRACTS) BETWEEN PHARMACEUTICAL MANUFACTURERS AND HEALTH CARE PAYERS FOR INDIVIDUAL PATIENTS AND FOR PATIENT COMMUNITIES. NEHI HELD A MULTI-STAKEHOLDER FORUM ON THE TOPIC ON CAPITOL HILL IN WASHINGTON IN DECEMBER 2019. A PLANNED FOLLOW-UP MEETING WAS CONVERTED TO AN ONLINE, ZOOM MEETING THAT WAS HELD IN MARCH 2020. AFTER SOME DELAYS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC NEHI PUBLISHED A WHITE PAPER WITH FINDINGS BASED ON RESEARCH, EXPERT INTERVIEWS, AND THE TWO DISCUSSION MEETINGS HELD IN 2019 AND 2020. THE WHITE PAPER WAS RELEASED IN OCTOBER 2020 AND IS AVAILABLE AT "PATIENTS AND THE NEXT GENERATION OF VALUE-BASED ARRANGEMENTS: REFRAMING THE VBA DEBATE AROUND PATIENT BENEFIT." NEHI PLANS WIDE DISSEMINATION OF THE WHITE PAPER IN FALL 2020.

INSULIN FIRST:IN JULY 2019 NEHI AGREED TO FACILITATE A SERIES OF DISCUSSION MEETINGS WITH ORGANIZATIONS REPRESENTING PERSONS WITH DIABETES REGARDING ACCESS TO INSULIN. THE MEETINGS WERE SPONSORED BY ELI LILLY & COMPANY AND WERE HELD IN RESPONSE TO A SERIES OF INCIDENTS THROUGHOUT THE U.S. IN WHICH PERSONS WITH DIABETES WERE HOSPITALIZED OR DIED DUE TO LACK OF EMERGENCY ACCESS TO INSULIN OR DUE TO RATIONING OF INSULIN BECAUSE OF COST. DISCUSSION CENTERED ON PROPOSALS FOR OUTREACH TO AT-RISK PERSONS USING INSULIN AND INITIATIVES TO CUT THEIR COST OF INSULIN. PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED THE AMERICAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION, THE JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION, THE NATIONAL DIABETES VOLUNTEER LEADERSHIP COUNCIL AND OTHER ORGANIZATIONS. NEHI SERVED AS MEETING ORGANIZER AND DISCUSSION FACILITATOR FOR A SERIES OF MEETINGS IN WASHINGTON THAT CONCLUDED IN DECEMBER 2019.

MEDICATION ADHERENCE: IN 2019 THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHAIN DRUG STORES FOUNDATION AGREED TO RE-PURPOSE FUNDING ORIGINALLY PROVIDED FOR OTHER PURPOSES TOWARDS A PROJECT TO UPDATE NEHI'S REVIEW OF RESEARCH ON TRENDS IN PATIENT MEDICATION ADHERENCE. THE PROJECT CONCLUDED IN JUNE 2020 WITH RELEASE OF A NEW NEHI POLICY BRIEF, NOW AVAILABLE AS "TAKING STOCK: PATIENT MEDICATION ADHERENCE AND CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT: A NEHI POLICY BRIEF."
