SIX ARTISTS WERE COMMISSIONED TO DESIGN NEW INITIATIVES, PROJECTS, AND PIECES.SILKROAD CONTINUED ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS, PRESENTING A VARIETY OF WORKSHOPS, PERFORMANCES, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EVENTS LED BY SILKROAD PERCUSSIONISTS, INCLUDING A GLIMPSE INTO THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEHIND A NEW COMMISSION, AND THE WALLS BECAME THE WORLD AROUND US.SILKROAD WORKSHOPPED A BRAND-NEW COMMISSION, EMERGENCE, AT HARVARD'S ARTLAB, WHICH ILLUMINATED THE WORK OF PIANIST, HARPIST, SINGER, AND COMPOSER ALICE COLTRANE TURIYASANGITANANDA. THE FIVE-DAY DEVELOPMENT CULMINATED IN A PUBLIC FACING WORK-IN-PROGRESS PERFORMANCE THAT BROUGHT TOGETHER THE HARVARD AND LOCAL ALLSTON, MA COMMUNITY.SILKROAD ALSO CONTINUED ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH BOSTON CONSERVATORY AT BERKLEE, PRESENTING A MULTI-DAY INTENSIVE ON IMPROVISATION AND CULTURALLY INFORMED MUSICIANSHIP, AS WELL AS A SEMESTER-LONG COURSE, THE SILKROAD CREATIVITY LAB, WHICH FOCUSED ON ARTISTIC CITIZENSHIP, MUSICAL COLONIALISM, IMPROVISATION, AND ART AS A TOOL FOR CONNECTION.SILKROAD PRESENTED ITS ANNUAL HARVARD CONCERT AT THE OBERON THEATRE, BRINGING TOGETHER STUDENTS FROM THE LAME DEER AND STANDING ROCK NATIVE RESERVATIONS TO PERFORM IN A COLLABORATIVE CONCERT WITH YO-YO MA AND OTHER SILKROAD ARTISTS.SILKROAD ADAPTED TO A NEW VIRTUAL LANDSCAPE IN LIGHT OF COVID-19, PRESENTING 38 "HOME SESSIONS" - SHORT, INTIMATE PERFORMANCES BY ARTISTS, SHARING SONGS OF COMFORT FROM THEIR OWN HOMES; 10 GLOBAL MUSICIAN WORKSHOP COMMUNITY MEETINGS; AND A VIRTUAL COLLABORATIVE CONCERT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PLAYING FOR CHANGE. SILKROAD RESPONDED TO THE PANDEMIC BY PROVIDING SUPPORT FOR OUR ARTIST COLLECTIVE, PULLING TOGETHER A FUND TO COMMISSION 13 SILKROAD ARTISTS TO CREATE NEW MUSICAL WORKS AND DEVELOP ENGAGING COMMUNITY OUTREACH.
