TO CUT CARBON EMISSIONS NOW BY DRIVING SYSTEMS CHANGE
TRANSITION/ENERGY SHIFT:ELECTRIFICATION IS NOT HAPPENING AT THE SPEED AND SCALE NEEDED. SO WE'VE DESIGNED A NETWORKED GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP (AKA GEOTHERMAL) SYSTEM THAT CAN BE INSTALLED AND OWNED BY GAS COMPANIES IN THEIR RIGHT-OF-WAY IN THE STREET, TRANSFORMING THE GAS COMPANIES FROM OBSTACLE TO ACCELERATOR. OUR SOLUTION USES WELL-KNOWN TECHNOLOGY AND COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT, BUT THROUGH INTERCONNECTION AMPLIFIES THE BENEFITS (AKIN TO HOW THE INTERNET AMPLIFIES THE CAPABILITIES OF A SINGLE COMPUTER). AN INDEPENDENT FEASIBILITY STUDY PROJECTED A LOWER CUSTOMER COST AND A 90% EMISSION REDUCTION BY 2050 AS THE ELECTRIC GRID USES MORE RENEWABLES. EVERSOURCE GAS HAS RECEIVED PERMISSION TO INSTALL A PILOT IN ITS GAS TERRITORY, AND ANOTHER PILOT HAS ALSO BEEN APPROVED IN THE MERRIMACK VALLEY IN THE AREA AFFECTED BY THE 2018 GAS DISASTER. THERE ARE ALSO FIVE OTHER UTILITIES/STATES INTERESTED IN PILOTING. WE'VE CONSULTED ON STATE AND NATIONAL LEGISLATION TO OPEN THE DOOR TO THIS TRANSITION, AND WE ARE BUILDING A RESEARCH AND EVALUATION TEAM TO STANDARDIZE AND SHARE PILOT RESULTS. GEOMICRODISTRICTS CAN BE A SAFER, BETTER BUSINESS MODEL FOR GAS COMPANIES WHILE PROVIDING EQUITABLE ACCESS TO RENEWABLE HEAT FOR CUSTOMERS, AND THEREFORE DRIVE ELECTRIFICATION AT THE SPEED AND SCALE WE NEED.IN 2020, HEET RECEIVED FUNDING FROM THE CONSERVATION LAW FOUNDATION (CLF) FROM A SETTLEMENT (FURTHER DETAILED IN NOTE 6) TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY AND RESPIRATORY HEALTH IN THREE BOSTON COMMUNITIES. WE'LL BE WORKING WITH COMMUNITY LEADERS AND ORGANIZATIONS IN DORCHESTER, ROXBURY, AND CHARLESTOWN/EAST BOSTON TO HELP PEOPLE REDUCE ENERGY USE AND ENERGY BILLS, WHILE HELPING HOMES BECOME READY TO TRANSITION OFF OF GAS TO ELECTRICITY FOR HEATING AND COOKING. WE'RE CALLING THIS NEW HEET PROGRAM EJ-AIR. EJ FOR ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE AND AIR FOR THE AIR WE ALL NEED TO BREATHE.
TRIAGE/GAS LEAKS:JUST 7% OF LEAKS FROM UNDERGROUND PIPES EMIT HALF OF ALL THE LEAKED GAS. HEET'S RESEARCH HELPED PASS A FIRST-IN-THE-NATION STATE LAW THAT THESE "SUPER-EMITTERS" MUST BE PRIORITIZED FOR REPAIR. HEET THEN LED RESEARCH WITH OUR STATE'S LARGEST UTILITIES TO IDENTIFY AN EFFICIENT METHOD TO IDENTIFY THESE LEAKS. IN 2019, OUR EMISSIONS-REDUCTION PLAN BECAME STATE REGULATION AND HEET AGREED TO VERIFY THE UTILITIES' WORK UNTIL 2024. IMPACT: THIS PROJECT WILL CUT IN HALF THE STATE'S EMISSIONS FROM GAS DISTRIBUTION PIPES, AND HEET RUNS THIS FOR JUST 12 CENTS PER MTCO2E (METRIC TON OF CARBON DIOXIDE EQUIVALENT).
TRUTH ABOUT GAS/GAS CHEMISTRY:GAS IS SOLD AS A "CLEAN AND "NATURAL" PRODUCT AND THE BEST WAY TO COOK. TOGETHER WITH ALLIES, HEET PIONEERED THE SAMPLING AND TESTING OF GAS FOR VOCS (VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS) AND IS NOW PARTNERED WITH HARVARD SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH TO STUDY THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE REGIONAL GAS SUPPLY. THE RESULTING PUBLICATION FROM HARVARD WILL HELP PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE GAS IN THEIR HOME AND FRACKING FIELDS. OUR TASTE THE FUTURE OUTREACH PROGRAM EXPLAINS THIS CONNECTION, AND THE CORRELATION BETWEEN GAS STOVES AND ASTHMA, WHILE SHOWCASING THE SPEED, SAFETY AND PRECISION OF INDUCTION COOKING. THIS COMBINATION IS EFFECTIVE AT SHIFTING CONSUMERS' DESIRE TOWARD ELECTRIFICATION.
