Organizations Filed Purposes: THE PHILLIPS BROOKS HOUSE ASSOCIATION (PBHA) STRIVES FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE. AS A STUDENT-LED ORGANIZATION, PBHA MOBILIZES VOLUNTEERS IN COLLABORATION WITH BOSTON AND CAMBRIDGE PARTNERS TO ADDRESS GAPS IN OPPORTUNITIES AND RESOURCES. WE DEVELOP STUDENT AND COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP TO CREATIVELY MEET CRITICAL NEEDS AND ADVOCATE FOR STRUCTURAL CHANGE. PBHA SEEKS TO PROMOTE SOCIAL AWARENESS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AT HARVARD AND BEYOND.

SUMMER PROGRAMS - DURING THE SUMMER OF 2019, THREE TERM TIME PROGRAMS PROVIDED ENHANCED PROGRAMMING (HSHS, Y2Y, ESOL). THIS INCLUDED SUMMER SHELTERS AND AN EXPANDED ADULT ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING PROGRAM. THE SHELTERS EACH OPERATED FOR A SIX-WEEK SUMMER SEASON. COLLECTIVELY THEY SERVED AROUND 100 GUESTS. THE ADULT ESOL PROGRAM SERVED OVER 300 LEARNERS IN THREE SITES: CHINATOWN, DORCHESTER AND CHELSEA. A SEVENTH TERM TIME PROGRAM, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY, ENGAGED IN DEVELOPMENT WORK OVER THE SUMMER. THIS TOOK THE SHAPE OF FURNITURE AND TEXT BOOK SALES. IN ADDITION TO THESE 7 PROGRAMS, PBHA OPERATED SUP, A COLLECTIVE OF 10 SUMMER DAY CAMPS AND ONE EVENING PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THERE ARE 10 DAY CAMPS WHICH RUN FOR 7 WEEKS IN THE SUMMER IN THE SAME NEIGHBORHOODS AS TERM PROGRAMS. FOR A VERY MODEST FEE, THE CAMPS PROVIDE ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AS WELL AS RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES TO OVER 800 LOW-INCOME CHILDREN. THE CAMPS ALSO RECRUIT JUNIOR COUNSELORS FROM THE NEIGHBORHOODS AND MANY PREVIOUS CAMPERS, WHO OFTEN GO ON TO BECOME SENIOR COUNSELORS AND DIRECTORS OF THE CAMPS.

TERM PROGRAMS - THERE ARE 51 TERM TIME PROGRAMS MEETING A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY NEEDS. INCLUDED IN THIS AREA ARE TWO PROGRAMS WITH MULTIPLE SITES THAT HAVE A COLLECTIVE BUDGET (ASB: 4 OR 5 TRIPS ANNUALLY, SWSG 10-12 SITES ANNUALLY, STAGE 4-5 SITES, HOPE: 6 SITES). THESE PROGRAMS MEET COMMUNITY NEEDS IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: ADULT EDUCATION, PRISON EDUCATION, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, ELDER SERVICES, AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT, ARTS ENRICHMENT, MENTORING, ADVOCACY, HEALTH AND HOUSING. PROGRAMS ARE CONDUCTED IN CAMBRIDGE, CHINATOWN, DORCHESTER, MISSION HILL, ROXBURY, SOUTH BOSTON, SOUTH END AND THE GREATER BOSTON CAMBRIDGE REGION. STUDENTS GAIN INVALUABLE EXPERIENCE COLLABORATING WITH INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITY-BASED AGENCIES. THIS OFTEN LEADS TO INCREASED CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND EMPLOYMENT IN THE PUBLIC SERVICE ARENA.

SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS - THE PRISCILLA CHAN STRIDE SERVICE PROGRAM FUND SUPPORTS STUDENTS OF DIVERSE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS AS THEY BECOME LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES, BOTH AS UNDERGRADUATES AND BEYOND. TO DO THIS, THE PROGRAM PROVIDES REFLECTION AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES, MENTORSHIP, AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE.
