Organizations Filed Purposes: THE YOUNG PEOPLE'S PROJECT USES MATH LITERACY WORK TO DEVELOP THE ABILITIES OF ELEMENTARY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE.

YOUNG PEOPLES PROJECT (YPP) IS A YOUTH MATH LITERACY ORGANIZATION THAT DEVELOPS THE ABILITIES OF HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND LIFE. YPP OFFERS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN EFFORTS TO ELIMINATE INSTITUTIONAL OBSTACLES TO THEIR SUCCESS. YPP WAS LAUNCHED IN THE MID-1990'S, BY TWO GENERATIONS OF YOUNG PEOPLE, AS AN OUTGROWTH OF THE ALGEBRA PROJECT, FOUNDED BY BOB MOSES. YPP FOUNDERS WERE AT THE TIME ALL PRESENT OR FORMER ALGEBRA PROJECT STUDENTS. THEY GROUNDED YPPS WORK IN THE UNDERSTANDING THAT PART OF THE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF IMPROVING ACADEMIC OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS AT THE BOTTOM LIES WITHIN THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES. YPP HAS OVER 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ENGAGING AND EMPLOYING YOUNG PEOPLE TO WORK OUT OF SCHOOL TO LEARN, TEACH, LEAD, AND ORGANIZE MATH LITERACY ACTIVITIES FOR AND WITH EACH OTHER. YPP HAS LEARNED THAT THERE ARE INDIVIDUALS, AGE 13 - 22, IN EVERY COMMUNITY WHO ARE INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THE SUCCESS OF THEIR YOUNGER PEERS; AND THAT WITH TRAINING, COACHING, AND DEVELOPMENT, THESE HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE MENTORS, WHO WE CALL MATH LITERACY WORKERS (MLW) CAN HAVE SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNGER PEERS WHILE ALSO DEVELOPING THEIR OWN SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES. YPP CONSIDERS THE WORK THAT THESE YOUNG PEOPLE DO TO BE ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE WORK. YPP EMPLOYS HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS AS "MATH LITERACY WORKERS" (MLWS) WHO MENTOR YOUNGER PEERS IN THEIR COMMUNITY, BUILDING CONFIDENCE, COMMUNITY, AND MATH AND STEM SKILLS. ANNUALLY YPP WORKS WITH 50 - 75 COLLEGE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, SERVES OVER 500 ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS THROUGH STEM LITERACY PROGRAMS, AND REACHES OVER 2000 MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC THROUGH MATH OUTREACH EVENTS. YPP HAS DEVELOPED ORIGINAL CURRICULUM MATERIALS AND FUN, INTERACTIVE MATH GAMES FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, AND TRAINING MATERIALS AND PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE STUDENTS. YPPS WORK IS GROUNDED IN THE BELIEF THAT THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES ARE IMPORTANT ASSETS WHO CAN BE INVESTED IN AS A KEY STRATEGY FOR BROADENING PARTICIPATION IN STEM AND ENSURING THAT MATH IS NOT AN OBSTACLE FOR FUTURE SUCCESS. RESEARCH SHOWS THAT NEAR PEER LEARNING AND TEACHING IS BENEFICIAL FOR OLDER AND YOUNGER STUDENTS. YPP STUDENTS AND MATH LITERACY WORKERS DEVELOP INCREASED CONFIDENCE IN THEIR ABILITY TO DO MATH, ENJOY MATH MORE, AND VALUE THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS GAINED FROM THE RELATIONSHIPS THEY FORM IN THE PROCESS OF DOING MATH TOGETHER. ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN YPP SHOW GAINS IN MATHEMATICAL UNDERSTANDING.
