THE MISSION OF THE PLAY BALL FOUNDATION IS TO CREATE AND EXPAND TEAM SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AGE URBAN YOUTH WHO ARE AT A PIVOTAL TIME OF PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE OF TEAM SPORTS, PLAY BALL! SEEKS TO INSPIRE YOUNG ATHLETES TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL, BECOME ENGAGED IN THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES AND DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS THAT WILL MAKE THEM BETTER PREPARED TO ENTER HIGH SCHOOL.THE PLAY BALL FOUNDATION SEEKS TO CREATE AND EXPAND SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR URBAN MIDDLE SCHOOLERS BECAUSE WE STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT ATHLETIC COMPETITION INTRODUCED AT AN IMPRESSIONABLE AGE CAN GREATLY IMPROVE SCHOOL PERFORMANCE, COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AND LIFE SKILLS OF YOUTH. IT'S HEALTHY PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.

WE PROVIDE ACCESS TO COMPETITIVE SPORTS FOR OVER 1,200 MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, MANY OF WHOM HAVE NEVER PLAYED AN ORGANIZED SPORT BEFORE. BECAUSE MORE THAN 78% LIVE BELOW THE POVERTY LINE, EVEN PAY-TO-PLAY SPORTS ARE NOT AN OPTION. TODAY PLAY BALL HAS 57 TEAMS OFFERING FOOTBALL, BASEBALL, DOUBLE DUTCH, GIRL'S VOLLEYBALL AND BOY'S AND GIRL'S SOCCER TO MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN 22 BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS. THROUGH THE EXPERIENCE OF TEAM SPORTS, PLAY BALL SEEKS TO INSPIRE YOUNG ATHLETES TO SUCCEED IN SCHOOL, BECOME ENGAGED IN THEIR SCHOOL COMMUNITIES, AND DEVELOP LIFE SKILLS THAT WILL MAKE THEM BETTER PREPARED TO ENTER HIGH SCHOOL. IN THE FALL OF 2009, THE ONLY TEAM SPORTS OFFERED BY THE BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO ITS 11,300 MIDDLE SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS WERE BASKETBALL AND TRACK. THESE LIMITED OFFERINGS STOOD IN STARK CONTRAST TO THE WIDE VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY SUBURBAN SCHOOL SYSTEMS, WHICH HAD THRIVING AFTER SCHOOL LEAGUES IN MULTIPLE SPORTS. PAY TO PLAY FEES WERE ALSO NOT AN OPTION, WITH APPROXIMATELY 78% OF BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS ELIGIBLE FOR FREE OR REDUCED PRICE LUNCH. THE PLAY BALL FOUNDATION PARTNERS WITH PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO FUND TEAM SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS. AS OF 2016, WE PROVIDE COMPETITIVE SPORTS TO OVER 1,200 BOSTON PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETES IN 22 SCHOOLS WITH 57 TEAMS OFFERING BOYS' FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL, GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL AND DOUBLE DUTCH, AND BOYS AND GIRLS SOCCER.
VARIOUS PROGRAM ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS AND SPECIAL EVENTS FOR STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE IN THE PLAY BALL PROGRAMS, DONATIONS TO VARIOUS PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT THE PLAY BALL MISSIONS OF CREATING AND EXPANDING TEAM SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL AGE URBAN YOUTHS. IN ADDITION WE PROVIDE LIMITED EDUCATION SUPPORT SERVICES TO STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE IN THE PLAY BALL PROGRAMS.
