TO CONSERVE AND PROMOTE NEW ENGLAND'S NATIVE PLANTS TO ENSURE HEALTHY, DIVERSE LANDSCAPES.
CONSERVATION - IN APRIL NATIVE PLANT TRUST WAS AMONG THE FIRST SMALL GROUP OF ORGANIZATIONS WORLDWIDE TO RECEIVE ADVANCED CONSERVATION PRACTITIONER ACCREDITATION BY LONDON-BASED BOTANIC GARDENS CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL (BGCI), WHICH INCLUDED AN ENDORSEMENT BY AN INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL REPRESENTING SIX CONTINENTS. CONTINUED IMPORTANT PROJECT TO RESTORE THE VEGETATION OF THE SUMMIT OF CADILLAC MOUNTAIN IN ACADIA NATIONAL PARK, WHICH IS THE HIGHEST POINT ALONG THE NORTH ATLANTIC SEABOARD. THIS MULTI-YEAR PROJECT FOR THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE IS TESTING TECHNIQUES THAT CAN BE APPLIED TO OTHER DAMAGED OR AT-RISK MOUNTAINTOP SITES.OUR AWARD-WINNING GO BOTANY WEBSITE, WHICH ENABLES PEOPLE TO IDENTIFY ALL 3,500 PLANTS ON THE NEW ENGLAND LANDSCAPE, REACHED MILESTONES OF 4.7 MILLION USERS AND 20.8 MILLION PAGE VIEWS, INCLUDING 1.3 MILLION USERS AND 4.9 MILLION PAGE VIEWS THIS YEAR.MADE SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS ON THE INTENSIVE EFFORT TO COLLECT THE SEEDS FROM 3,300 POPULATIONS OF THE REGION'S 389 RARE AND ENDANGERED PLANTS FOR PERMANENT CONSERVATION IN THE SEED BANK AND FOR USE IN PROJECTS TO ENHANCE THEIR VIABILITY ON THE LANDSCAPE. STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS COLLECTED SEED FROM MORE THAN 100 SPECIES AT 160 SITES IN ALL SIX STATES. SEED BANK VOLUNTEERS DONATED 470 HOURS TO CLEANING AND PROCESSING SEEDS FOR STORAGE.IN TOTAL, TRAINED VOLUNTEERS GAVE MORE THAN 28,000 HOURS TO THE REGIONAL PLANT CONSERVATION PROGRAM THIS YEAR. THIS INCLUDES PROFESSIONAL BOTANISTS WHO REVIEW DATA AND SET CONSERVATION PRIORITIES, PLUS FIELD VOLUNTEERS WHO MONITOR THE STATUS OF RARE AND ENDANGERED PLANTS, COLLECT SEED, AND UNDERTAKE MANAGEMENT TO BENEFIT RARE PLANTS.CONTINUED WORK ON 4 RESTORATION PROJECTS WITH RARE SPECIES, INCLUDING AUGMENTING POPULATIONS OF A PLANT THAT EXISTS NOWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD BUT 3 SITES ALONG THE CONNECTICUT RIVER. ALSO COMPLETED STATE-WIDE SURVEYS FOR A FEDERALLY-LISTED ENDANGERED SPECIES RECENTLY REDISCOVERED AFTER LAST BEING SEEN IN 1962, 2 SURVEYS AND MANAGEMENT PLANS FOR 3 REGIONALLY-RARE SPECIES, 1 INVASIVE PLANT CONTROL PROJECT, AND VEGETATION MANAGEMENT FOR NATIVE SEED MIXES USED IN EROSION CONTROL ON MAJOR ROADS IN MASSACHUSETTS.
HORTICULTURE - IN ITS 6-MONTH SEASON, GARDEN IN THE WOODS (GITW), A WORLD-RENOWNED BOTANIC GARDEN, SERVED 18,000 VISITORS. THE MISSION OF THE 45-ACRE NATIVE PLANT BOTANIC GARDEN IS TO EDUCATE AND INSPIRE VISITORS TO USE NATIVE PLANTS IN THEIR GARDENS AND TO CONSERVE THEM IN THE WILD. THE GARDEN IS ALSO A RESOURCE FOR NATIVE PLANT RESEARCH AND A LIVING LABORATORY FOR PUBLIC PROGRAMMING AND CHILDREN'S EDUCATION. WE OPERATE THE GARDEN USING ECOLOGICAL BEST PRACTICES AND ASPIRE TO BE A MODEL FOR COLLEAGUES. WE ALSO OFFER FREE ADMISSION TO THE PUBLIC ON SELECTED DAYS, AS WELL AS DISCOUNTED ADMISSION THROUGH PASSES AVAILABLE AT LOCAL LIBRARIES.AT OUR NASAMI FARM NURSERY, STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS GREW APPROXIMATELY 50,000 NEW ENGLAND NATIVE PLANTS FROM SEED COLLECTED SUSTAINABLY AND ETHICALLY FROM LOCAL WILD POPULATIONS.THESE PLANTS ARE SOLD IN OUR RETAIL SHOPS, USED IN RESTORATION PROJECTS, AND DISPLAYED IN THE GARDENS AT GITW.DEDICATED HORTICULTURE VOLUNTEERS AT GITW AND NASAMI FARM DONATED MORE THAN 3,000 HOURS IN SEED COLLECTING AND CLEANING, PROPAGATION, AND GARDEN MAINTENANCE.
PUBLIC PROGRAMS - PUBLIC PROGRAMS OFFERED A SIGNIFICANT PERCENTAGE OF NEW PROGRAMS IN 2019 AND EXPANDED THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE PARTICIPATING IN BOTH ONLINE AND IN-PERSON COURSES AND FIELD STUDIES. THE 165 PROGRAMS IN ALL 6 STATES--FOCUSING ON NATIVE PLANT BOTANY, CONSERVATION, HORTICULTURE, LANDSCAPE HISTORY, AND GARDENING--DREW 3,373 PARTICIPANTS. OFFERED 2 IMPORTANT SYMPOSIA: ON PLANT CONSERVATION, WITH MAINE AUDUBON; AND ON NATIVE PLANT DESIGN, WITH RHODE ISLAND AUDUBON. ALSO WORKED WITH LOCAL CULTURAL COUNCILS THROUGHOUT MASSACHUSETTS TO OFFER A FREE CONSERVATION LECTURE SERIES AT LIBRARIES.ENGAGED ADULT VISITORS TO GARDEN IN THE WOODS WITH 160 TOURS, SERVING BOTH INDIVUALS AND GROUPS RANGING FROM LOCAL GARDEN CLUBS TO NATIONAL HORTICULTURE GROUPS. ALSO CONDUCTED 105 SCHOOL TOURS, SERVING 1,047 CHILDREN.54 DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS COLLECTIVELY DONATED 1,152 HOURS. INCLUDES 28 TOUR GUIDES, WHO DONATED 179 HOURS; 13 PROGRAM HOSTS, WHO CONTRIBUTED 657 HOURS; 14 VOLUNTEERS WHO CONTRIBUTED 75 HOURS TO UPDATE THE GARDEN'S BLOOM BOARD; AND 3 LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS, WHO CONTRIBUTED 193 HOURS TO MANAGING THE RESOURCE LIBRARY. SOME OF THESE VOLUNTEERS ALSO CONTRIBUTED ANOTHER 48 HOURS TO SPECIAL EVENTS.
