Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE URBAN FARMING INSTITUTE OF BOSTON'S (UFI) MISSION IS TO DEVELOP AND PROMOTE URBAN FARMING AS A COMMERCIAL SECTOR THAT CREATES GREEN COLLAR JOBS FOR RESIDENTS; AND TO ENGAGE URBAN COMMUNITIES IN BUILDING A HEALTHIER AND MORE LOCALLY BASED FOOD SYSTEM.
FARMER TRAINING PROGRAM: THE UFI FARMER TRAINING PROGRAM HAD A TOTAL OF 21 PARTICIPANTS FOR ITS 9- WEEK PROGRAM AND 5 FARMER TRAINING STUDENTS FOR ITS 20 WEEK IN-FIELD PROGRAM. INFORMATION SESSIONS WERE HELD IN ROXBURY, DORCHESTER AND MATTAPAN FROM JANUARY THROUGH MARCH TO INSURE PARTICIPATION FROM OUR TARGET COMMUNITIES. PARTICIPANTS IN THE 9 WEEK PROGRAM EXPLORE THE WORLD OF URBAN FARMING WITH VOLUNTEER DAYS INCLUDED. PARTICIPANTS IN THE 20 WEEKS IN FIELD PROGRAM LEARN ALL AREAS OF URBAN FARMING FROM PLANTING, SEEDING, WEEDING, PATHWAY CONSTRUCTION, HARVESTING, PRODUCTION, WORKING WITH VOLUNTEERS, AND FARM BUSINESS PLANNING. UFI FARM TRAINEES ALSO RECEIVE PERSONAL FINANCIAL LITERACY TRAINING AND MARKETING. THE YOUNG FARMERS PROJECT ENJOYED A 2ND SUCCESSFUL YEAR WITH 4 TEENAGERS. DURING THE 6-WEEK PROGRAM TEENS LEARNED ABOUT URBAN FARMING, MARKETING, AND FARM STAND SALES. STUDENTS ALSO MET WITH OTHER MASSACHUSETTS YOUTH GROUPS TO LEARN ABOUT AQUACULTURE AND FOOD & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION: UFI HAD 750 VOLUNTEERS OF CONSISTING OF YOUTH, FAMILIES, AND CORPORATIONS IN 2019. THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM CONTINUES TO EXPAND EACH YEAR. VOLUNTEERS SPEND 3 TO 4 HOURS LEARNING ABOUT PLANTING, GROWING, HARVESTING, SOIL COMPOSITION, COMPOSTING AND MORE. UFI HOSTED WORKSHOPS, SUCH AS, FOOD AS MEDICINE, FORAGING FOR WILD EDIBLES, BEES, ANNUAL FOOD DAY AND GARLIC FEST, MUSHROOM WORKSHOP, AND GROWING FOOD WITHOUT A GARDEN. UFI HOSTED IT FIRST BOOK TALK WITH LEAH PENNIMAN AUTHOR OF FARMING WHILE BLACK. WE ALSO ORGANIZED A PRE-THANKSGIVING FARM STAND AND HOLIDAY FARM STAND.
FARM OPERATIONS: UFI WORKED 7 FARM SITES IN 2019 AND GREW AN ESTIMATED 19,000 POUNDS OF FOOD. UFI HAD 20 CROPS WITH OVER 100 VARIETIES OF VEGETABLES AND HERBS. UFI'S MAIN CROP IS A CUSTOMIZED SALAD GREEN MIX SOLD PRIMARILY TO RESTAURANTS. OVER 3000 POUNDS OF PRODUCE WERE DONATED TO FAMILIES IN NEED. CONSTRUCTION WAS 90% COMPLETE ON OUR FIRST GREENHOUSE ERECTED ON TOMMY'S ROCK IN ROXBURY WITH ANTICIPATED USE IN 2020. UFI HAD A SUCCESSFUL 2ND SEASON AT THE FCE MATTAPAN FARM STAND AT OUR HEADQUARTERS AND CONTINUED INCREASED REVENUE AT THE BOWDOIN/GENEVA FARM STAND IN DORCHESTER.
