Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE WALNUT STREET CENTER IS TO PROVIDE ADULTS, WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE ENGAGED AND MEANINGFUL LIVES. THE AGENCY ACCOMPLISHES THIS MISSION BY OFFERING A VARIETY OF SUPPORT SERVICES THAT PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE, WORK, VOLUNTEER AND SOCIALIZE IN THE COMMUNITY. THE WALNUT STREET CENTER IS CURRENTLY DEVELOPING AND ENHANCING SUPPORT SERVICES TO MEET THE CHANGING NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SERVED BY THIS AGENCY.

RESIDENTIAL SUPPORTS PROGRAM:WALNUT STREET CENTER IS COMMITTED TO THE IDEA THAT QUALITY OF LIFE BEGINS IN THE HOME. WALNUT STREET CENTER BELIEVES THAT PROVIDING A SAFE, COMFORTABLE HOME THAT PROMOTES DIGNITY AND INDEPENDENCE AS WELL AS INTEGRATION WITHIN THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY IS CENTRAL TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE INDIVIDUALS IT SERVES. WALNUT STREET CENTER PROVIDES RESIDENTIAL SUPPORTS TO MANY ADULTS WHO HAVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN THE COMMUNITIES OF SOMERVILLE, CAMBRIDGE, ARLINGTON AND METRO NORTH AREAS. SUCH SERVICES INCLUDE SEMI-INDEPENDENT APARTMENTS, TWENTY-FOUR-HOUR SUPPORT RESIDENTIAL HOMES AND SPECIALIZED CARE UNITS.

DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM:WALNUT STREET CENTER'S DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM OPENED IN AUGUST 2003. THE DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM OFFERS ADULTS, WHO HAVE DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, INTENSIVE MEDICAL, BEHAVIORAL AND THERAPEUTIC SERVICES IN ORDER TO ENHANCE THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE. ACTIVITIES FOCUS ON HELPING EACH INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVE THERAPEUTIC GOALS, WHILE FOSTERING EACH PERSON'S HIGHEST LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE. INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THE PROGRAM WORK ON ACHIEVING GOALS IN A VARIETY OF AREAS SUCH AS SELF-HELP, INDEPENDENT LIVING, AND COMMUNICATION. DAY HABILITATION STAFF WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH A CLINICAL TEAM THAT INCLUDES A REGISTERED NURSE, A PHYSICAL THERAPIST, AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST AND A SPEECH THERAPIST TO ADDRESS THESE GOALS.

COMMUNITY-BASED DAY SUPPORTSTHIS PROGRAM PROVIDES PRE-VOCATIONAL AND RECREATIONAL SUPPORTS TO INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE VARYING DEGREES OF DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. COMMUNITY-BASED DAY SUPPORTS PROVIDES ACTIVITIES THAT FOCUS ON LIFE SKILLS, COMMUNITY INTEGRATION, SOCIAL INCLUSION, LEISURE AND RECREATION AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTEER WORK. PARTICIPATION IN THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE IS AN INTEGRAL ROLE OF THIS PROGRAM. A VARIETY OF TRAININGS, THERAPIES, AND GROUP DISCUSSIONS ARE OFFERED TO MEET THE NEEDS OF EACH INDIVIDUAL. TRAININGS TAKE PLACE IN BOTH GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL SETTINGS TO BEST SUPPORT AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EACH PERSON'S LIFE. DAILY DISCUSSION GROUPS ADDRESS A WIDE VARIETY OF TOPICS SUCH AS HUMAN RIGHTS, FIRE SAFETY, HEALTH AND NUTRITION, AND CURRENT EVENTS.
