TO TRANSFORM THE LIVES OF FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN FACING HOMELESSNESS BY MOBILIZING A DIVERSE COMMUNITY TO PROVIDE SHELTER, EDUCATION AND COMPREHENSIVE SUPPORT.
SHELTERTHE FAMILY PROMISE METROWEST SHELTER INCLUDES 19 HOST CONGREGATIONS THAT FURNISH TEMPORARY SHELTER TO OUR FAMILIES BY CONVERTING THEIR CLASSROOMS INTO BEDROOMS, ONE WEEK AT A TIME, THREE TO FOUR WEEKS PER YEAR. TRAINED VOLUNTEERS FROM THE HOST CONGREGATIONS, 31 ADDITIONAL SUPPORT CONGREGATIONS, AND THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE PROVIDE MEALS, ROOM SET-UP, AND HOSPITALITY FOR OUR FAMILIES. A SAFE, NURTURING ENVIRONMENT IS THE FOUNDATION OF OUR UNIQUE APPROACH, ALLOWING FAMILIES THE OPPORTUNITY TO FOCUS ON GOALS THAT WILL ENSURE LONG-TERM SUSTAINABILITY.IN MARCH 2020 WITH THE ONSET OF COVID-19, WE MOVED OUR FAMILIES FROM THE CONGREGATIONAL ROTATION INTO A HOTEL FOR THEIR HEALTH AND SAFETY. OUR SHELTER HAS REMAINED OPEN USING THE HOTEL FOR HOUSING, AND FOOD FROM DONATIONS/GIFT CARDS FROM OUR CONGREGATIONS AND BROADER COMMUNITY. IN 2020 WE PROVIDED SAFE SHELTER TO A TOTAL OF 37 INDIVIDUALS INCLUDING 22 CHILDREN.
SAIL (FORMERLY TRANSITIONAL LIVING)OUR SUSTAINING ACHIEVEMENT FOR INDEPENDENT LIVING (SAIL) PROGRAM SUPPORTS FAMILIES TRANSITIONING FROM SHELTER INTO PERMANENT HOUSING BY PROVIDING RESOURCES THAT ASSIST THEM IN ESTABLISHING LONG-TERM STABILITY AND INDEPENDENCE. FPM PROVIDES INTENSIVE CASE MANAGEMENT AND SUBSIDIES FOR 1-2 YEARS IN AREAS THAT ADDRESS THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF OUR FAMILIES INCLUDING HOUSING COSTS AND DEBT REDUCTION. IN 2020, DUE TO COVID 48% OF OUR FAMILIES BECAME UNEMPLOYED. THERE WAS ALSO AN EVICTION ON MORATORIUMS IN THE STATE OF MA, RESULTING IN LANDLORDS BECOMING MORE CONCERNED AND HESITANT IN RENTING TO OUR FAMILIES. TO ADDRESS THIS CHALLENGE, WE ACTED AS A GUARANTOR OR COSIGNED LEASES FOR OUR FAMILIES MOVING OUT OF SHELTER AS NEEDED. WE ALSO INCREASED OUR RENTAL SUBSIDIES IN TRANSITIONAL LIVING FROM $550/MONTH TO AS MUCH AS $1,600 IN ORDER TO KEEP FAMILIES MOVING FROM THE HOTEL INTO THE COMMUNITY. IN 2020 THE SAIL PROGRAM SUPPORTED 36 INDIVIDUALS INCLUDING 23 CHILDREN.
LIFETHE LOCAL INITIATIVE FOR FAMILY EMPOWERMENT ("LIFE") PROGRAM IS A HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS FAMILIES WHO ARE AT RISK OF EVICTION BUT NOT YET HOMELESS. WHEN INITIALLY ENTERING THE PROGRAM, SUBSIDIES ARE AVAILABLE TO PAY RENT IN ARREARAGE, AND ADVOCACY IS OFFERED WITH THE LANDLORD TO PREVENT EVICTION. FAMILIES ARE THEN SUPPORTED WITH ONE YEAR OF CASE MANAGEMENT, CREATING GOALS THAT ADDRESS THE ROOT CAUSES OF THEIR NEAR EVICTION. IN 2020 THIS PROGRAM PREVENTED 74 INDIVIDUALS INCLUDING 44 CHILDREN FROM BECOMING HOMELESS.
