Organizations Filed Purposes: THE SECOND STEP IS A COMMUNITY OF SURVIVORS, ADVOCATES, AND VOLUNTEERS WHO FOSTER THE SAFETY, STABILITY, AND WELL-BEING OF THOSE WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. WE PROVIDE FREE COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES, INCLUDING SAFETY PLANNING, LEGAL ADVOCACY, COUNSELING, PEER SUPPORT, TRANSITIONAL HOUSING, AND OTHER ESSENTIAL SERVICES TO ADULT AND CHILD SURVIVORS HEALING FROM THE TRAUMA OF DOMESTIC ABUSE, IN GREATER BOSTON AND EASTERN MA.

RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS: TSS OPERATES TWO RESIDENCES FOR FAMILIES LEAVING EMERGENCY, SHORT-TERM SHELTERS; FAMILIES ARE ELIGIBLE TO REMAIN FOR UP TO TWO YEARS DURING WHICH THEY ENGAGE IN SERVICES DESIGNED TO GIVE THEM THE TOOLS THEY NEED TO LIVE INDEPENDENTLY. FAMILIES - ADULTS AND CHILDREN ALIKE - HAVE ACCESS TO EXTENSIVE CASE MANAGEMENT, ADVOCACY, AND OTHER COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES. THESE SERVICES INCLUDE - BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO - PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SUPPORTIVE AND PSYCHO-EDUCATIONAL GROUPS, FAMILY NURTURING AND STABILIZATION SERVICES, ASSISTANCE WITH THE HOUSING SEARCH PROCESS, AND REFERRALS TO OTHER AGENCIES, SERVICES, AND SYSTEMS AS APPROPRIATE.HOUSING STABILIZATION: HOUSING SPECIALISTS WORK WITH SURVIVORS WHO HAVE BEEN MADE HOMELESS BY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OR WHO ARE AT RISK OF ONGOING ABUSE IN THEIR CURRENT LIVING SITUATIONS. SPECIALISTS HELP SURVIVORS ASSESS THEIR HOUSING NEEDS, AND PROVIDE SUPPORT IN IDENTIFYING, APPLYING FOR, SECURING AND MAINTAINING SAFE PERMANENT, AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

COMMUNITY PROGRAM: TSS PROVIDES EXTENSIVE SERVICES IN THE COMMUNITY, INCLUDING SAFETY PLANNING AND CASE MANAGEMENT. COMMUNITY SERVICES INCLUDE CONNECTING SURVIVORS TO OTHER LOCAL PROVIDERS, AS WELL AS STATE AND INSURANCE BENEFITS. CASE MANAGEMENT INCLUDES TEACHING SURVIVORS ABOUT SELF-CARE AND STRESS MANAGEMENT, AND STRATEGIZING WITH THEM ABOUT EMPLOYMENT AND FINANCIAL HEALTH, WELLNESS, AND RESPONSES TO CHRONIC PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL ISSUES.LEGAL SERVICES: OUR STEPS TO JUSTICE PROGRAM PROVIDES TRAUMA INFORMED COMPREHENSIVE LEGAL SERVICES IN WAYS THAT OTHER SERVICES CANNOT. STAFF ATTORNEYS AND DEDICATED PRO-BONO ATTORNEYS PROVIDE REPRESENTATION AND ASSISTANCE WITH RESTRAINING ORDERS, CHILD CUSTODY AND SUPPORT, GUARDIANSHIP, IMMIGRATION, BENEFITS, AND HOUSING. WORKING WITH A NETWORK OF COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS AND VOLUNTEER ATTORNEYS, WE ARE ABLE TO PROVIDE REPRESENTATION FOR ALL TSS CLIENTS, REGARDLESS OF THE COMPLEXITY OF THEIR CASE OR THEIR FINANCIAL SITUATION.

YOUTH SERVICES: TSS OFFERS A RANGE OF SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WHO HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND/OR ARE AT HEIGHTENED RISK OF BECOMING INVOLVED IN ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIPS. WE OFFER SUPPORTIVE GROUPS FOR TEENS, AND OUR AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM PROVIDES SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TOGETHER WITH STAGE-APPROPRIATE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT FOR CHILDREN IN THE RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS. THROUGH ONE-ON-ONE RELATIONSHIPS AND THE GROUP SUPPORTS THAT OUR YOUNG PEOPLE BUILD, WE CREATE CONNECTION OUT OF ISOLATION, EMPOWERING THESE YOUTH TO CREATE NEW FUTURES ON THEIR OWN TERMS.
