Organizations Filed Purposes:
HISTORIC NORTHAMPTON PRESERVES, STUDIES, AND INTERPRETS THE HISTORY, HERITAGE AND MATERIAL CULTURE OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, AND THE SURROUNDING REGION BY PRESERVING HISTORIC BUILDINGS, DOCUMENTS, AND OBJECTS, AND BY MAKING HISTORICAL MATERIALS AVAILABLE TO RESEARCHERS, HISTORIANS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS THROUGH ITS RESEARCH LIBRARY, EXHIBITIONS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS AND WEBSITE. THEY ALSO ORGANIZE COMMUNITY PROJECTS THROUGH WHICH THE RESIDENTS OF NORTHAMPTON CAN WORK TOGETHER TO COLLECT AND PRESERVE THEIR COMMON HISTORY.
HISTORIC NORTHAMPTON INC. PRESERVES, STUDIES, AND INTERPRETS THE HISTORY AND MATERIAL CULTURE OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS, BY MAINTAINING HISTORIC HOUSES, PRESENTING EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMS, PROVIDING RESEARCH SERVICES TO SCHOLARS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AND ORGANIZING COMMUNITY HISTORY PROJECTS.
THE MUSEUM BEGAN A PROJECT TO RESTORE AND REPOEN AN 1805 BARN, THE LAST REMAINING HISTORIC BARN NEAR DOWNTOWN NORTHAMPTON. THE BARN WAS EMPTIED OF 650 ARTIFACTS WHICH WERE INVENTORIED AND HOUSED IN OTHER STORAGE. JACK SOBON, ARCHITECT, DRAFTED A PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF THE STRUCTURE. EXHIBIT DESIGNERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS WERE INVITED TO PRESENT PROPOSALS FOR USING THE BARN AS A PUBLIC GALLERY, VENUE FOR DRAMA AND MUSIC AND AS A SPACE FOR CRAFT WORKSHOPS AND OTHER PROGRAMS.
IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, HISTORIC NORTHAMPTON BEGAN THE COVID-19 STORIES PROJECT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DAILY HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE SPECIAL SECTIONS AND FORBES LIBRARY. THE PUBLIC WAS INVITED TO SUBMIT REFLECTIONS, ARTWORK, PHOTOGRAPHS AND MUSIC DESCRIBING THEIR EXPERIENCES DURING THE PANDEMIC. THE SUBMISSIONS HAVE BEEN PLACED ONLINE ON A DIGITAL ARCHIVE AND ARE BEING ARCHIVED AT HISTORIC NORTHAMPTON FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.
THE MUSEUM PRESENTED OR CO-SPONSORED 19 PUBLIC TALKS AND PROGRAMS FROM OCTOBER 2020 - MARCH 1, 2020. IN APRIL 2020, HISTORIC NORTHAMPTON TRANSITIONED TO ONLINE PROGRAMMING BY DEVELOPING A NEW SECTION ON ITS WEBSITE - HISTORY AT HOME. THIS WEBPAGE FEATURES KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES, VIDEOS AND COLORING SHEETS THAT COMBINE LOCAL HISTORY, LEARNING AND FUN TO SUPPORT FAMILIES AND TEACHERS WITH REMOTE LEARNING. IN SUMMER 2020, THE MUSEUM COORDINATED AN OUTDOOR SCAVENGER HUNT, THE GREAT NORTHAMPTON EGG HUNT. THE PUBLIC WAS INVITED TO LOCATE IN STORE WINDOWS 38 EGGS PAINTED TO LOOK LIKE THE EGGS OF SPECIES OF BIRDS THAT NEST IN MASSACHUSETTS.
