Organizations Filed Purposes: Our mission is to teach children and their caretakers safe and proven methods of sun protection and skin cancer prevention. Our aim is to reduce the incidence and impact of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

SunAWARE Education Our mission is to prevent skin cancer one child at a time through education and advocacy. To that end, we have taught over one million children and adults through our signature SunAWARE For Life Program, changed laws and saved lives. Our national SunAWARE K-12 curriculum is cross-curricular, age appropriate, and builds on knowledge. The curriculum was delivered in schools over 10 days last year in Massachusetts. The program has been adapted for the community and was delivered locally and nationally over 16 days. SunAWARE Educators provided professional programming on 10 additional days nationally. CMPF taught a total of 36 days, in schools (28%), at community events (44%) and at professional symposia (28%) reaching approximately 15,000 children and adults. With the help of our new SunAWARE Program Coordinator and four program project grants CMPF was set to have a banner year. Due to the COVID 19 emergency stay-at-home order, CMPF had to cancel over 75 Spring programs in schools, the community and at professional conferences. CMPF received a grant to develop program videos from the Community Health Alliance #23 and completed Grade 3-5 and 6-8 lessons in April. These videos were distributed to all of our participating schools for online access and marketing was done through our Partners in Prevention Program. We assisted classroom teachers via Zoom lessons. Educating professionals about sun protection and skin cancer prevention is another way that we promote our mission. Our staff, board members, and advisory council members provided programs at nursing, medical, and legislative conferences. Karrie Fairbrother, Advisory Council member, accompanied Ms. Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, Executive Director and Dr. Richard Eisen to the Maui Derm 2020 conference where they represented the foundation to over 500 health professionals. Ms. Maryellen Maguire- Eisen and Maura Flynn, SunAWARE Educator, worked as advisors to two University of Massachusetts doctoral nursing students for their skin cancer research projects completed in May, 2020.

Advocacy Advocating for laws that will protect children from developing skin cancer is central to our mission and a major service to society. Our Advocacy Coordinator, Maura Flynn, was instrumental in spearheading a Massachusetts House Resolution declaring May as Skin Cancer Awareness and Detection Month. In 2020, Melanoma Monday and Don't Fry Day, two national days of skin cancer awareness, were officially recognized in the month of May in the Commonwealth. Pattie Day and Gayle Peterson, Advisory Council members, accompanied Maura Flynn to Capital Hill to educate lawmakers about skin cancer prevention. Ms. Day wrote a blog about the experience which was shared via social media.

Web Communicating to our stakeholders, followers, and the community at large about sun protection and skin cancer prevention is achieved through our strong Internet presence. Our newly designed website clearly describes our mission, impact, what we do, where and when we teach or advocate, as well as how others can help. Our curriculum and resources are all available, free-of-charge, to the public. Gus Naughton, board member and software engineer, provides analytics quarterly, as well as search engine optimization. CMPF has had consistent growth and engagement in its social media program. We have over 20,000 followers on five social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Instagram. Engagement is quite high at over 10%. Our social media consultant, Pam Smith (Creative Pear Marketing & Design) assists in the development of an annual plan and helps create relevant content and infographics to engage the public regarding our educational and advocacy actions. Tweets focus on the latest research findings, as well as sun protection tips on our two Twitter accounts.
