WE USE OUR COMMUNITY-FOCUSED DEVELOPMENT MODEL TO INVEST RESOURCES INTO LOW-INCOME OR DISTRESSED NEIGHBORHOODS ON THE NORTH SHORE TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR RESIDENTS. WE ARE COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH AFFORDABLE HOUSING, ECONOMIC AND YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, AND URBAN ART.
YOUTH PROGRAMS: THE MAIN COMPONENT OF THE YOUTH PROGRAMS IS YOUTHBUILD. OPERATING YEAR-ROUND, AND SERVING 32 ACTIVE MEMBERS PLUS AN ADDITIONAL 32 ALUMNI EACH YEAR, NORTH SHORE CDC'S YOUTHBUILD PROGRAM PROVIDES ACADEMIC, LEADERSHIP AND EMPLOYMENT TRAINING TO SUPPORT YOUTH WHO LEFT HIGH SCHOOL WITHOUT A DIPLOMA AS THEY SEEK TO OBTAIN THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA (HISET), AND WORK TOWARDS INDUSTRY-RECOGNIZED CREDENTIALING, WITH A GOAL OF OBTAINING SUSTAINABLE EMPLOYMENT. ORIGINALLY A CONSTRUCTION TRAINING PROGRAM, NORTH SHORE CDC'S YOUTHBUILD NOW OFFERS TWO TARGETED CERTIFICATION PATHWAYS - CONSTRUCTION AND CERTIFIED NURSE ASSISTANT (CNA) - AND WE ALSO PROVIDE COLLEGE ACCESS AND FURTHER ADVANCED TRAINING EXPLORATION FOR A RANGE OF OTHER EMPLOYMENT TRACKS IN CUSTOMER SERVICE, MEDICAL AND MANUFACTURING. THE GOAL OF THE PROGRAM IS TO PROVIDE 32 OPPORTUNITY YOUTH WITH TARGETED SERVICES AND TRAINING IN ORDER TO: 1) EARN A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY DIPLOMA (HISET); 2) EARN A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED CONSTRUCTION CERTIFICATE; 3) FIND A JOB AND/OR ENROLL IN POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION.
PUAM: NORTH SHORE CDC'S PUNTO URBAN ART MUSEUM (PUAM) WAS FOUNDED TO ADDRESS SOCIAL JUSTICE AND EQUITY AMONG OUR TARGET COMMUNITY OF THE POINT NEIGHBORHOOD IN SALEM, MA. PUAM HOSTS 75 LARGE SCALE PUBLIC MURALS, INVITES LOCAL ARTISTS TO PARTICIPATE IN MURALS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, HOSTS TOURS FOR STUDENT GROUPS, AND OFFERS NUMEROUS COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES ANNUALLY. MANY OF THESE MURALS WERE PAINTED BY ARTISTS FROM EUROPE, NORTH AMERICA AND SOUTH AMERICA. USING CREATIVE PLACEMAKING AND RESIDENT ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES, PUAM ALLOWS THE AGENCY TO ILLUSTRATE THE HISTORY AND ROLE OF IMMIGRATION IN THE POINT NEIGHBORHOOD, WITH VISITORS, STUDENT GROUPS, AND OTHERS, INCLUDING HOW REDLINING AND RACISM IN OUR COUNTRY THROUGHOUT HISTORY IS AT THE ROOT OF ISSUES FACED BY BLIGHTED NEIGHBORHOODS NATIONWIDE.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING, SERVING OVER 800 INDIVIDUALS, FAMILIES, AND CHILDREN IN MORE THAN 400 UNITS OF DEEPLY AFFORDABLE HOUSING, WITH 257 UNITS IN THE PIPELINE AND ANOTHER 180 IN DEVELOPMENT. A RECENT PROJECT IS HARBOR LAFAYETTE HOUSING WHICH CONSISTS OF 27 UNITS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING;10 UNITS ARE SET ASIDE FOR DPH CLIENTS AND 17 UNITS ARE FOR YOUTH WHO HAVE AGED OUT OF FOSTER CARE OR WHO HAVE FORMERLY BEEN HOMELESS.
