THE MISSION OF THE SALEM PANTRY IS TO ERADICATE HUNGER IN THE SALEM COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING RESIDENTS IN NEED WITH NUTRITIOUS FOODS IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF DIGNITY AND RESPECT.
THE SALEM PANTRY WAS FORMED IN 1991 AS A STRICTLY VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATION. IN RECENT YEARS, THE ORGANIZATION HAS OPERATED TWO CORE PROGRAMS, THE BACKPACK PROGRAM AND MOBILE MARKET POP UP PROGRAM. THE BACKPACK PROGRAM TRADITIONALLY PARTNERS WITH SALEM PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS IN NEED WITH FOOD FOR WEEKEND MEALS. THE MOBILE MARKETS OPERATE IN TWO OF THE HIGHEST NEED AREAS IN THE CITY. IN THE PAST 9 MONTHS, SALEM PANTRY HIRED ITS FIRST EVER FULL-TIME STAFF, AN OPERATIONS MANAGER, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND FOOD WAREHOUSE COORDINATOR THIS SUMMER. COMBINED WITH A BOARD OF DIRECTORS, THE PANTRY STAFF WORKS WITH COUNTLESS VOLUNTEERS TO OPERATE ITS PROGRAMS. THE SALEM PANTRY QUICKLY AND STRATEGICALLY EXPANDED SERVICES DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC TO ADDRESS SALEM RESIDENTS' FOOD INSECURITY THROUGH OUR STRENGTHENED MOBILE MARKETS, NEW EMERGENCY GROCERY ASSISTANCE WITH SALEM PUBLIC SCHOOL (SPS) AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS AND A NEW HOUSEHOLD DELIVERY MODEL TO VULNERABLE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY. SINCE MARCH, WE HAVE OPERATED OUR EXPANDED MOBILE MARKET PROGRAM, A NEW EMERGENCY FAMILY GROCERY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM WITH SALEM PUBLIC SCHOOLS AND A NEW HOUSEHOLD DELIVERY PROGRAM. OVERALL, OUR PROGRAMS ARE OPERATING OVER 400% INCREASE SINCE THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BEGAN. DURING COVID-19, OUR PANTRY HAS DISTRIBUTED FOOD TO 1,800 DIFFERENT SALEM HOUSEHOLDS AND OVER 5,500 UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS. OUR MOBILE DISTRIBUTION SITES AND HOME DELIVERIES HAVE PROVIDED A MONTHLY AVERAGE OF 72,500 POUNDS (AN ESTIMATED 60,000 MEALS) WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY SINCE MID-MARCH. GIVEN THE DRAMATIC RISE IN THE NEED FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE SINCE THE ONSET OF COVID-19, THE SALEM PANTRY'S WORK IS MORE CRUCIAL THAN EVER. IN THE SPRING OF 2020, SALEM PANTRY RECEIVED A $50,000 CAPACITY BUILDING GRANT THROUGH THE GREATER BOSTON FOOD BANK, INCLUDING A MATCH FROM THE BRACE COVE FOUNDATION, TO BUILD OUT THE FIRST PHASE OF A NEW FOOD STORAGE WAREHOUSE. IN JULY OF 2020, THE PANTRY RECEIVED $128,000 GRANT THROUGH THE MA FOOD SECURITY INFRASTRUCTURE GRANT PROGRAM TOWARDS THE WAREHOUSE PROJECT AND PURCHASE A NEW DELIVERY VAN. ADDITIONALLY, THIS CAPITAL AND INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING HAS ALLOWED FOR SALEM PANTRY TO NEWLY PARTNER WITH HUNGER RELIEF AGENCIES IN THE GREATER NORTH SHORE TO SUPPORT THEIR FOOD ACQUISITION THROUGH OUR WAREHOUSE SPACE. ALL TOLD, THESE TWO LARGE GRANTS HAVE ENABLED THE SALEM PANTRY TO QUICKLY GROW OUR PROGRAMMING CAPACITY AND REACH TO ALIGN WITH THE COMMUNITY NEED, IN AND OUTSIDE OF SALEM. OUR WAREHOUSE IS UP AND RUNNING, HOWEVER THE PROJECT IS NOT YET COMPLETE AND ADDITIONAL FUNDS ARE NEEDED FOR OPERATIONAL COSTS AND MAINTENANCE IMPROVEMENTS.THE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE SALEM PANTRY CONSIST OF DEDICATED AN ENGAGED BOARD AND A CULTURALLY AND ECONOMICALLY DIVERSE GROUP OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS, A NUMBER OF WHOM ARE PANTRY CLIENTS THEMSELVES. OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO A MIX OF SALEM PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENTS OR CAREGIVERS, SALEM STATE STUDENTS, STAFF AND FACULTY, SALEM ROTARY MEMBERS AND PEOPLE CONCERNED ABOUT THE NEED FOR FOOD IN OUR COMMUNITY. IN ADDITION TO A ROBUST POOL OF GENERAL VOLUNTEERS WHO SUPPORT THE PANTRY PROGRAMMING, WE HAVE A NUMBER OF SPECIALTY VOLUNTEERS, PROVIDING RESOURCES SUCH AS DATA ENTRY, PHOTOGRAPHY AND CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT.
