Organizations Filed Purposes: We believe that local, prosperous, and diverse farms are essential to the economic health and environmental quality of the region; that an informed and engaged community is essential to the long-term sustainability of our local farms; and that all members of the community should have access to locally-grown food. Our mission is to strengthen farms and engage the community to build the local food economy. Our programs work to bring that mission to reality.

CISA strengthens farms and engages the community to build the local food economy.

CISA's local hero program educates people about the benefits of farms, farming, and local agriculture. The local hero program reaches residents through events, publications, individual outreach, press, and CISA's online presence. In 2019, CISA's activities, programs, and highlights of local farms were the subject of 169 newspaper articles, radio, and TV news stories, and over 800 radio, TV, and print ads and PSA's, and over 1 million impressions via online advertising. Thirty-thousand copies of our seasonal guides were distributed to inform residents and visitors about the benefits of local farms and farming, over 13,000 people receive monthly e-mail information from CISA or Facebook updates and CISA reaches at least an additional 2,000 people through attendance at CISA events, community festivals, fairs, and farmers' markets. CISA's website recorded over 59,000 users and 311,393 page views in 2019. In 2019, participants in CISA's local hero program included 271 farms, 142 retailers, 64 restaurants, and 40 institutions (hospitals, universities, schools, and senior living facilities) and specialty products manufacturers. Ninety percent of farmers surveyed were satisfied with the program.

CISA's farm & business support program provides technical assistance and education to farmers on issues like business management, marketing, and customer communication. In 2019 CISA had specific funding to support beginning farmers, farmers who sell direct to consumers, and wholesale farmers. One hundred and sixty seven farms and businesses attended 18 CISA-run workshops and 177 technical assistance consultations.

Local food for all: through this program, CISA expands market access for farmers and community members and provides low-income senior citizens with a farm share and educates seniors and service providers about the benefits of fresh, local food. We work directly with farmers' markets and farms to support them in accepting EBT/snap and HIP (a state-run incentive program for local fruits and vegetables) and support farmers' markets in outreach and communications to potential customers.
