THE MISSION OF THE GRAY HOUSE IS TO HELP ITS NEIGHBORS FACING HARDSHIPS TO MEET THEIR IMMEDIATE AND TRANSITIONAL NEEDS BY PROVIDING FOOD, CLOTHING, AND EDUCATIONAL SERVICES IN A SAFE, POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT IN THE NORTH END OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMTHIS PROGRAM FOCUSES ON HELPING MIGRANTS, REFUGEES AND ASYLEES IMPROVE THEIR ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS WHILE INCORPORATING LIFE SKILLS. IT OFFERS SMALL GROUP CLASSES IN FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS (READING, WRITING, MATH, FINANCE, HEALTH AND COMPUTER/DIGITAL) INSTRUCTION, BEGINNER ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL), AND LITERACY DEVELOPMENT, AS WELL AS DROP-IN ENGLISH CONVERSATION PRACTICE. THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 53 ADULT LEARNERS ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM DURING THE FISCAL YEAR.
KIDS' CLUB AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMTHIS PROGRAM HELPS CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 7 AND 12 WHO LIVE IN POVERTY. EVERY MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON, CHILDREN COME TO THE GRAY HOUSE TO GET HELP WITH THEIR HOMEWORK AND PARTICIPATE IN HEALTHY, CREATIVE ACTIVITIES. OUR FIVE WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM WELCOMES CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 7 AND 12 WHO RECEIVE BREAKFAST, LUNCH AND SNACKS, PARTICIPATE IN COOPERATIVE GAMES WHICH TEACH TEAM BUILDING AND ENCOURAGE SELF-ESTEEM AND GO ON FIELD TRIPS THAT ARE FUN AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL. 25 CHILDREN WERE SERVED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM DURING THE FISCAL YEAR.
EMERGENCY FOOD PANTRY AND CLOTHING DISTRIBUTIONTHE MARKET AT GRAY HOUSE PROVIDES FOOD TO PEOPLE IN NEED. IN ADDITION TO THURSDAYS FROM 9AM TO 12PM, THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN EVERY 2ND AND 4TH FRIDAY OF THE MONTH FROM 4PM TO 6PM TO ACCOMODATE THE WORKING POOR IN THE AREA. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDED FOOD TO 9,978 HOUSEHOLDS WITH A TOTAL OF 28,400 MEMBERS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR.THE GRAY HOUSE PROVIDES EMERGENCY HATS, GLOVES, SCARVES AND COATS (AND HYGIENE ITEMS WHEN AVAILABLE) TO MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN NEED.
