Media & AwarenessINTERACTS MEDIA & AWARENESS RAISING WORK PROMOTES SENSITIVE, ACCURATE, OWN-VOICES COVERAGE OF INTERSEX ISSUES IN JOURNALISM AND ENTERTAINMENT MEDIA. INTERACTS WORK WAS FEATURED IN 92 PIECES OF MEDIA COVERAGE IN 2020, INCLUDING, CNN, The LA Times and Teen Vogue . interACT gained 5,0000 new followers on social media and staff and youth advocates did 72 talks, panels and presentations. Additionally interACT consulted on several entertainment media projects including an upcoming TV series, a musical and several books.
Law and PolicyWorked with New York City council member to bring forward legislation to create a public education campaign through the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene promoting delay of unnecessary surgeries on intersex children.Submitted amicus curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in pivotal Bostock case, ensuring intersex lived experiences were considered by the nation's highest court in the context of sex discrimination.Direct medical advocacy culminated in first two U.S. hospitals announcing moratoriums on certain surgical procedures on intersex children too young to meaningfully participate in the decision.Successfully advocated for inclusion of an intersex surgery question in the Human Rights Campaign's definitive Healthcare Equality Index survey for hospitals seeking to be leaders in LGBTQ+ patient careProduced the first intersex-affirming primary care guide in collaboration with The Fenway Institute
interACT YouthinterACT Youth, is our intersex youth advocacy collective, empowering young intersex advocates with connection, leadership skills, and a platform to raise their voices. Youth voices are at the heart and soul of our mission to honor intersex bodily integrity and autonomy in decision-making. In 2020, Youth members participated in 24 virtual talks, appeared as guests on 3 podcasts, published 13 articles on platforms such as Teen Vogue, Hunger, them, and Autostraddle, and one member is in the process of releasing an intersex graphic novel. interACT was also successful in getting Youth member narratives featured throughout the year and for Intersex Awareness Day. At the beginning of October, interACT launched a series of personal essays that explored some of the issues that intersex people face. Nine Youth members participated in that series, with topics including what intersex youth wish they had known before publicly coming out and what its like voting as an intersex person.
