LCDS is the federally designated OPO coordinating organ donation for six counties in Connecticut and three counties in Western Massachusetts. LCDS serves 23 acute care hospitals and 2 transplant centers.

The Organ Donation Services program at LCDS is designed to effectively coordinate and maximize the donation of organs for transplant in the LCDSs designated service area. In order to fulfill this core mission as an Organ Procurement Organization, coordinators are available 24 hours a day to respond onsite at hospitals within LCDSs service area when a potential organ donor has been identified. This includes evaluating every potential organ donor's medical condition, maintaining clinical support throughout the organ recovery process, and managing the complex logistics of the surgical recovery, preservation, packaging, transportation and appropriate allocation of donated organs to recipients. As part of this service, coordinators provide support and information to families. If a patient authorized donation through a donor registry, the coordinators work with the family to carry-out the patients decision. If the patient had not made a donation decision, the coordinators work with family to obtain authorization for donation. The Organ Donation Services program is focused on increasing the number of organs available for transplantation by increasing the conversion rate of potential organ donors to actual organ donors and by maximizing the placement of organs for transplant. LifeChoice Donor Services serves two transplant centers. LCDS allocates organs for transplant regionally and nationally through the OPTN National System. During 2019, 262 organs were recovered and 231 organs were transplanted.
