Organizations Filed Purposes:
To educate and research global food security and carbon balance in soils and seas, to enable ecosystem life support, to build multidisciplinary integrative design teams by gathering diverse researchers and scholars under one roof to learn and collaborate, and to solve global climate challenges.
Climate Foundation further has been researching and designing Marine Permaculture technologies, which can restore overturning circulation in the ocean and provide food, feed, fertilizer and biofuels, among other products and services, to ocean states globally. It can also reverse coral bleaching in key areas and potentially mitigate the worst effects of climate change in oceanic and coastal environments. Marine Permaculture grows seaweed and fish habitat, which enable growing hundreds of tons of fish and thousands of tons of marine biomass each year per square kilometer. Over the past several years, the Climate Foundation has observed mass coral bleaching globally. For example, coral bleaching observed in Hawaii in 2015 was the worst bleaching event in the last half a century on Hawaii. These bleaching events are occuring with increasing frequency, representing dire consequences associated with global warming that marine permiculture can potentially address in the long term. A successful demonstration of marine permiculture infrastructure will pave the way to protect high-value reefs across tropical oceans.
Climate House brings together researchers from diverse backgrounds under one roof to help build multidisciplinary integrative design teams that can solve global climate challenges. Part of this involves space for scholars to come to Woods Hole, learn and collaborate, who may otherwise have difficulty doing so. The Climate House provides such a location to conduct such interdisciplinary solution collaboration.
