Audio Journal, Incorporated' s mission in Central Massachusetts is to connect individuals with a visual impairment, or an inability to access print material, to their communities through broadcasting of local news, information and entertainment, with exclusive programs and content.
Radio Reading for the BlindAudio Journal Incorporated is generically known as a radio reading service for the blind. Others we serve are described as "print disabled." Whether it be Parkinson's disease, or another disability, these individuals have difficulty accessing print material. Listeners hear broadcasts via a smart speaker (Amazon Echo), smart phone, internet, telephone, cable tv or a special receiver tuned to Audio Journal's frequency. Most of our programming is available as pod casts on demand from our website. Our 130 volunteers read newspapers, magazines, books, grocery and retail flyers, health information and more. Local content is most difficult for individuals who are visually impaired to obtain so that is our focus. We read and broadcast: * Worcester Telegram and Gazette * News from small communities * Worcester Business Journal * Grocery and retail flyers * Disability sports * Books by New England authors or set in New EnglandIn addition, we have specialty programs: * Speaking Volumes is our radio book group which was highlighted in the February 2019 issue of Oprah's O Magazine. * Another Point of View selects a topic, for instance Black Lives Matter, and reads articles from both the liberal and conservative sides of the aisle. * Vocero Hispano, a local Spanish newspaper, connects us to the blind Hispanic community. * Radio-Active Theater broadcasts family-friendly plays from old time radio and film. Our purpose includes offering entertainment and intellectual stimulation for our listeners, many of whom were avid readers. A local reading service for the visually-impaired and print disabled is a valued source of information and companionship, helping to minimize the social isolation often experienced by people who are disabled. "As my sight gets dimmer, Audio Journal brightens me more and more. You don't know what is going on in Worcester unless you listen to Audio Journal."CJ, Worcester"I love your show. I love it because I feel like I am never alone. It's like my company."Joe, Worcester
