MAINE CONSERVATION VOTERS PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN TURNING PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR CONSERVATION INTO NEW LAWS TO PROTECT OUR AIR, LAND, WATER AND WILDLIFE. AS A RESULT OF SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN STRATEGIES, A FOCUSED POLICY AGENDA AND SHARP ACCOUNTABILITY TOOLS, WE ARE BUILDING MAINE'S ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT INTO A POWERFUL FORCE. MCV PROGRAMS INCLUDE AN ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCORECARD ON MAINE LEGISLATORS, A GOVERNOR'S REPORT CARD, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY AT THE STATE HOUSE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT.
Advocacy at the State House: In 2018, we worked with state lawmakers to pass the clean water bond which was approved on last November's ballot, made modest progress on tackling food waste, and the legislature agreed to lower the cap for greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the eight other Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative states. Holding Maine's elected officials accountable: Since 1986, MCV's annual Environmental Scorecard has provided Maine people with factual information about the most important environmental legislation considered in Maine's State House. Our Scorecard has become an essential educational tool to determine the environmental record of all members of the Maine State Legislature. We score the votes on the most important issues of the year, including energy, climate change, clean water, public health, and land conservation. In 2018, MCV printed and mailed 2,700 copies of the scorecard to supporters and distributed them at community events. MCV also printed and mailed 8,140 oversized postcards to environmentally concerned Mainers inviting them to view the Environmental Scorecard on our website. Additionally, we highlighted individual legislators' scores to the media in their respective districts through press releases and events. Climate Action Campaign Maine: For five years, a coalition of environmental organizations including Maine Conservation Voters have partnered with diverse groups across constituencies to protect Maine's health and economy from attacks on lifesaving public health and environmental protections. In 2018, we engaged a variety of stakeholders, including local business leaders, health professionals, sportsmen, and local elected officials to speak out against the attacks on the federal policies and programs that protect our air, environment and health. Central to this work was mobilizing key constituencies, implementing earned media and digital campaigns, and organizing high-impact events. Educating the public: MCV continued its popular Conservation Luncheon Series to bring community leaders together to discuss cutting edge environmental issues. We organized two well-attended Luncheons in 2018 featuring Senator Angus King and Meteorologist Keith Carson.
