Organizations Filed Purposes: Maine 200 exists to work in conjunction with the Maine Bicentennial Commission to plan, administer, and coordinate programs and projects that commemorate Maine's 200th anniversary of statehood (continued on Schedule O...)(continued from Form 990, page 2...) with three major goals: (1) to explore Maine's history from the many perspectives of its multiple past and current populations; (2) to celebrate Maine's present people, places, institutions and economy; and (3) to envision the public and private actions that will enhance Maine's future prosperity.

To plan, administer, coordinate, and commemorate Maine's 200th anniversary of statehood.

Maine 200 began the Maine Statehood Bicentennial year of 2020 with a focus on its mission to plan, administer, and coordinate programs and projects with the Maine Bicentennial Commission that commemorate Maine's 200th anniversary of statehood. The Statehood Day ceremony was slated for Sunday, March 15 and much planning and coordination had gone into this event, with all the materials and organization in place. However, Gov. Mills declared a state of civil emergency on March 12 due to the outbreak of the COVID pandemic and the organization was forced to cancel the event. (Continued on Schedule O...)All of the other planned events and programs for the bicentennial were also subsequently postponed to tentative dates in 2021. Maine 200 laid off its full-time staff person as of May 15, 2020 to reserve staffing funding until such time as Maine 200 can resume activities.Despite the pandemic shutdown of our operations, Maine 200 did fulfill its mission to support localized bicentennial awards and programs via the Bicentennial Community Grant program. Through the Maine Arts Commission, Maine 200 awarded funds in the final two rounds of the grant program in 2020: In February, $432,290 amongst 133 successful applicants; and in June, $80,684 amongst 19 successful applicants. With all three rounds of the grants now complete, including the first round in September 2019, the Commission has disbursed a total of $667,429 assisting 170 successful applicants with their local bicentennial plans. Most of the awardees also had to postpone their events to 2021, but they remain eager to see them executed and share the bicentennial with people in their communities. While most of our planning efforts were put on hold, Maine 200 continued to make progress on creation of a bicentennial time capsule, in coordination with the University of Maine composites team and Maine Heritage Timber Works, with a view toward an initial unveiling in Spring 2021 to re-establish the commission's presence in the new year. Throughout 2020, additional educational resources about Maine history were also added to our website, via partner agencies and outside entities, and our social media remained active. These initiatives helped to raise public awareness of Maine's history and culture. To close the year, Maine 200 participated in the governor's Blaine House Christmas tree decorative display, with lobsters and logo buttons offsetting the Maine 200 tree's more than 200 candy canes representing those who lost their lives to the pandemic during the bicentennial year.
