Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Foundation educates and advocates for the sustainable use of the forest and the ecological, economic and social health of Maine's forest community.
HOLT: The Holt Woodlands Research Foundation was founded in 1980 to assist and support the University of Maine in accomplishing its charitable and educational programs by providing real and personal property for the conduct of scientific research and experimentation in forestry and for the funding of programs and for the awarding of scholarships and grants to projects and students involved in forest research, conservation, replantation, management and ecological control. Maine TREE expects to continue research activities at Holt and employ its best efforts to expand and better utilize the Holt Research Forest as a place for public education relating to forest ecology and forest management.
PROJECT LEARNING TREE: The Maine TREE Foundation sponsors and supports the Sustainable Forestry Initiative's national Project Learning Tree program in Maine. The curriculum is designed to provide school children in grades king=kindergarten through twelve with awareness, knowledge and skills related to Maine's natural resources, primarily the forest. The goals are 1) to prepare students to make responsible environmental and natural resource decisions and 2) to teach the importance of well-managed forests and of wood, paper and other products from trees.
LEAF: Long-Term Education About Forests Program, is designed to increase public understanding of an appreciation for Maine's 17 million acres of forest. LEAF encourages recognition of and respect for all forest values including wood, recreation, wildlife, aesthetics, soil and water quality and biodiversity of plant and animal species through such programs as TEachers' Tours of Maine forests and mills. Outdoor Classrooms and School Forests, assistance to small landowners, collaboration with other groups to provide accurate information about the forest with a monthly electronic newsletter and providing outreach on forest bioproducts research to educators and the general public.
