Organizations Filed Purposes: KEEPING THE 1932 CRITERION THEATRE ALIVE THROUGH THE ARTS AND CINEMA. KEEPING THE ARTS ALIVE IN DOWNEAST MAINE THROUGH THE 1932 CRITERION THEATRE.

2019 WAS ANOTHER YEAR FOR REBUILDING, RENEWING AND REINVIGORATING THE 1932 CRITERION. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO MAINTAIN THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND CONTEXT OF A BUILDING ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES WHILE ALSO OPERATING AS A LIVING AND VITAL CORNERSTONE OF DOWNEAST MAINE'S CULTURAL LANDSCAPE? IN 2019 WE BUILT ON 2018'S TOTAL OVERHAUL OF OUR FUNDRAISING PLANS, SYSTEMS AND DATABASES. THE CRITERION HOSTED ITS FIRST EVER GALA. THE EVENT WAS VERY WELL RECEIVED BY THE COMMUNITY. THE CRITERION NOW HAS A COMPREHENSIVE DATABASE OF DONORS, PATRONS, MEMBERS, SPONSORS AND OTHER CONSTITUENTS. WE HAVE INSTITUTED NEW MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA FOR INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES, IMPLEMENTED A NEW PLANNED GIVING POLICY, INSTITUTED A GIVE OR GET POLICY FOR BOARD MEMBERS AND SUBMITTED GRANT APPLICATIONS. WE RECEIVED A NUMBER OF DEDICATED GRANTS THAT ALLOWED US TO REVITALIZE THE LIGHTS AND SOUND SYSTEM AS WELL AS CREATURE COMFORTS SUCH AS THE HVAC SYSTEM. BECAUSE OF THOSE CHANGES AND BECAUSE OF LEADERSHIP AND BOARD ENTHUSIASM FOR THE THEATRE, WE HAVE MADE GIGANTIC STRIDES IN 2019. 2019 SAW A CONTINUATION OF PRIOR YEARS' SUCCESSES IN PROGRAMMING. THE CRITERION WAS ABLE TO DIVERSIFY ITS PROGRAMMING THROUGH A DIVERSITY GRANT FROM THE WITHAM FAMILY FOUNDATION, BRINGING IN TALENT DURING THE ABBE MUSEUM'S INDIAN MARKET. WE ONCE AGAIN SERVED FAMILY AUDIENCES THROUGH YOUTH PROGRAMMING, WE BROUGHT INCREASED DANCE PROGRAMMING TO THE THEATRE AND WE PARTNERED WITH THE ACADIA NIGHT SKY FESTIVAL AND THE MAINE SCIENCE FESTIVAL FOR INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING SURROUNDING COMMUNITY EVENTS. OUR PROGRAMMING CALENDAR FOR 2019 WAS FULL OF A DIVERSE AND EXCITING ROSTER OF LIVE PERFORMERS. WE HAVE RECEIVED FUNDING TO COMPLETELY REPLACE AND UPDATE OUR SOUND AND LIGHTING SYSTEMS. WE HAVE A STATE OF THE ART LISTENING ASSIST AND PERSONAL CLOSED CAPTION SYSTEM INSTALLED AND BEING UTILIZED. AT THE END OF 2019 OUR LEADERSHIP TEAM MOVED ON TO OTHER PROJECTS BUT THE CRITERION THEATRE REMAINS THE VIBRANT DOWNEAST PERFORMING AND CULTURAL ARTS CENTER. WE WILL BE BACK STRONGER THAN EVER.
