Organizations Filed Purposes: The purpose of the Corporation is to advocate for the health and preservation of the Midcoast Maine coastline, rivers and coastal watersheds - and in particular the Little River and its adjacent intertidal estuary in Penobscot Bay - through science, education and providing assistance, including the financial assistance for litigation purposes, to those seeking to protect and preserve the Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area from actions deemed detrimental to this fragile intertidal estuary in its natural condition. It is a further purpose to restore the Little River as a natural fishway. Friends of the Harriet L. Hartley Conservation Area is organized and operated exclusively for educational and scientific purposes in accordance with section 501(c)(3) for the Internal Revenue Code or corresponding section of any future federal tax code.

The Friends hosted a public presentation at the site of the conservation area announcing the formation of the Friends, describing the history of the conservation area, its boundaries, and encouraging membership. The Friends placed permanent visible markers in the ground defining the boaundary of the conservation property. The Friends established a visible presence in downtown Belfast, Maine at The Commons. Current activities include: ongoing public education by volunteer members of the Conservation Area about the environmental and ecological importance of intertidal zones in general; continuing public education about how to use and at the same time protect this fragile but ecologically important area; use of The Commons as a focal point where the public is invited to come for educational materials and discussions.
