Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE MAINE LAKE'S SOCIETY IS TO SAVE MAINE'S LAKES-TO PROTECT AND PRESERVE THE VALUES AND BENEFITS OF MAINE'S LAKES, PONDS, AND WATERSHEDS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS THROUGH SCIENCE-BASED ACTION, EDUCATION AND ADVOCACY.

LAKESMART IS MAINE LAKE'S FLAGSHIP PROGRAM THAT USES A CORPS OF TRAINED VOLUNTEERS TO VISIT, EDUCATE AND REWARD LAKEFRONT HOMEOWNERS WHO MANAGE THEIR PROPERTIES IN WAYS THAT PROTECT WATER QUALITY, AQUATIC HABITAT, PROPERTY VALUES, AND THE RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES HEALTHY LAKES PROVIDE. IN 2019, THE PROGRAM GREW WITH 7 WORKSHOPS TO TRAIN NEW EVALUATORS, PLUS 3 OTHER WORKSHOPS FOR REALTORS AND LOON "AMBASSADORS". SEVENTY-SEVEN LAKESMART VOLUNTEERS FROM 26 LAKE ASSOCIATIONS SPENT MORE THAN 1,100 HOURS CONDUCTING MORE THAN 240 LAKESMART EVALUATIONS ON 42 LAKES ACROSS THE STATE. OF THOSE EVALUATIONS, WE AWARDED 119 LAKESMART AWARDS, AND WILL FOLLOW UP WITH REMAINING LANDOWNERS TO MOVE THEM TO ACHIEVE THE AWARD IN 2020. THE KEY TO SUCCESS FOR LAKESMART IS CONTINUING MOMENTUM ON LAKES WITH ESTABLISHED PROGRAMS, CREATING A BEHAVIORAL NORM AMONG LAKEFRONT HOMEOWNERS THAT THE RIGHT THING, IN FACT THE ONLY THING TO DO, IS TO STOP EROSION AND PROTECT WATER QUALITY.

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH-MAINE LAKES WORKED ON SEVERAL EDUCATION AND OUTREACH EFFORTS IN 2019. LAKES ALIVE, OUR YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM ON OUR 30-FOOT FLOATING CLASSROOM, THE MELINDA ANN, MADE 13 TRIPS OVER THE SUMMER, AT 7 DIFFERENT SUMMER CAMPS, LAKE ASSOCIATION EVENTS, AND SCHOOLS. WE REACHED OVER 150 KIDS AND ADULTS, SHARING INFORMATION ABOUT LAKE SCIENCE, ECOLOGY, AND RESEARCH. IN OTHER EDUCATION EFFORTS, WE WORKED ON TWO SUCCESSFUL GRANT APPLICATIONS TO ISSUE A NEW EDITION OF THE LAKE BOOK (DUE OUT SUMMER 2020), AND PUBLISHED TWO NEWSLETTERS THAT COVERED TOPICS OF INTEREST TO LAKE DWELLERS TO HELP THEM BECOME MORE INFORMED AND TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT THEIR LAKES.

ANNUAL MAINE LAKES CONFERENCE-MAINE LAKES HOSTS AN ANNUAL MAINE LAKES CONFERENCE EVERY JUNE. THE CONFERENCE SERVES PRIMARILY OUR LAKE ASSOCIATION MEMBERS, THOUGH ALL WHO ATTEND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE OPPORTUNITIES TO NETWORK WITH OTHER LAKE DWELLERS AND SHARE IDEAS FOR COMMUNITY ACTION. THE 2019 CONFERENCE HAD A THEME OF "JUMP IN- AND THE 9 SPEAKERS ADDRESSED A BROAD ARRAY OF TOPICS INCLUDING INTERPRETIVE MESSAGING FOR SIGNS AND KIOSKS, SEPTIC SYSTEM ISSUES, ADVOCACY FOR LAKE-FRIENDLY LEGISLATION, DRONES TO MONITOR ALGAE, ALGAE IDENTIFICATION, AND NEW APP FOR IDENTIFYING LAKE FLORA AND FAUNA.
