Vet to Vet Maine is Maine's singular volunteer companion peer support program for military veterans. Our mission is to alleviate social isolation and loneliness among Maine's veterans by providing them with trained volunteer companions (also veterans), linking them to needed services and benefits, supporting independent living, and fostering friendships and mentoring among veterans.
In 2019, 100+ volunteers spent more than 6,000 hours of service in the program, including 67 volunteer visitors who logged 3,600 hours assisting or visiting their veteran friends. Currently, 74 older veterans are connected to V2VMaine veteran volunteers in southern Maine. In addition to gaining a friend, these veterans, with help from their V2VMaine volunteers, benefited from the following: a WWII veteran obtained her VA pension (retroactively for two year); several veterans enrolled in the VA and/or applied for VA benefits; a veteran moved to better quarters; two veterans obtained fuel assistance; a veteran with no means of communicating received a Tracfone and minutes; and a veteran had his fuel tank repaired. Veteran volunteers connected their veteran friends to a multitude of services from VA home health services, mental health counseling, Meals on Wheels and other food programs, VA housing assistance, and respite for family members.
Set up emergency fund and provided funds for groceries, fuel, phone, and minor repairs for more than 20 veterans during pandemic. Veterans received gift cards and fuel, phone, and oil tank repair valued at $2,724.
