LifeFlight provides critical care and specialized medical transport by air and ground ambulances to the entire state of Maine and under mutual aid to hospitals and EMS agencies in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts.LifeFlight is licensed by the State of Maine and is accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems and is a member of the Association of Critical Care Transport.
LifeFlight of Maine (LOM) is the primary provider of critical care air and ground transport services throughout the State of Maine. Critical care services are supplied directly to patients needing high acuity transport between hospitals, at emergency scenes in support of local EMS and public safety organizations, and in concert with public safety agencies selected search and rescue services. EMS and public safety requests for LifeFlight are managed through State EMS protocols overseen by the State Medical Direction and Practice Board. Emergent hospital transfers from emergency department and critical care units are at request physicians caring for critically ill or injured patients requiring emergent resuscitation, stabilization, and transportation for specialty services at major medical centers throughout Maine, New England and beyond.
Patient Care:In FY2020 LifeFlight provided resuscitation and transport to 2267 patients originating from 118 communities, 32 referring hospitals in Maine, 14 communities and 9 hospitals in New Hampshire, 6 communities and 3 hospitals in Massachusetts, and 2 hospitals in Vermont. Patients were transported to 19 receiving hospitals in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania. LifeFlight is financially supported by care to patients with funding from the LifeFlight Foundation to support aviation infrastructure, specialized medical equipment, aircraft, and outreach education. LOM provides care to critically ill and injured patients without regard to the ability to pay for care or insurance status. In FY2020 LOM incurred $1,652,441 of costs to care for patients without insurance coverage and unable to cover the cost of care. LifeFlight also provided contractual allowances with third party payors including reductions in revenue for Medicare and MaineCare beneficiaries reduced revenue by $12,514,097.Education:LifeFlight also provides a wide variety of safety and clinical continuing medical education. In FY2020 the SARS Co-V-2 pandemic disrupted LifeFlight's clinical outreach programs.LifeFlight provides ground safety education for EMS, public safety agencies, 911 dispatchers, and the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. In FY2020 provided programs to 290 public safety personnel in 13 communities. LifeFlight also provides critical care continuing medical education to physicians, nurses, paramedics, and other clinicians at hospitals and through LifeFlight's Critical Care Academy. In FY20 LifeFlight developed an external Academy Program with Northern Maine Community College to train nurses and paramedics working in the hospitals and EMS services in Aroostook County. In total LifeFlight provided continuing medical education to 176 clinicians at three hospitals and four communities.
In addition to providing care to critically ill and injured patients, during FY2020 LOM supported a private-public aviation infrastructure with the State of Maine and the Federal Aviation Administration including: - Staffing and maintenance support and commissioning for 18 automated weather observation systems located at rural airports in Belfast, Machias, Princeton, Jackman, Greenville, Carrabassett, Skowhegan, Bethel, Brunswick, Bridgton, Eastport, hospitals in Fort Kent, Farmington, Rumford, Bridgton, and Lewiston, and Matinicus, Vinalhaven, and Monhegan islands. - Working with the FAA to support 39 new Point in Space (PINS) Instrument Approach and Departure Flight Procedures at hospitals, airports, and islands. - Staffing and support to update and maintain all hospital and Point In Space Instrument Procedure aviation facilities in the FAA 5010 database- Providing technical and consulting support including use of helicopters for flight sound studies, staff training, neighborhood committees for construction of the new helipads at Maine Medical Center in Portland - Providing technical consulting and support for runway extension projects in Rangeley, Machias, Eastport, and Jackman - Support for fuel trucks at Northern Aroostook Regional Airport in Frenchville and Northern Maine Regional Airport in Presque Isle- Established a joint program with the Federal Aviation Administration to develop a national demonstration project on low level performance based navigation in the 'next gen' air traffic control system.- Initiated a project to install runway surveillance and weather reporting cameras.- Supported the US Helicopter Safety Team Infrastructure Work Group. LifeFlight also runs a remote access project with over 140 remote access points in conjunction with the Maine Department of Conservation, the Maine Emergency Management Agency, Maine Fire Chiefs Association, Homeland Security, public safety agencies, and numerous private landowners, woodland and forest product companies as well as outdoor recreation organizations. During FY20, LifeFlight continued to provide an on-line database of over 700 approved landing sites with access granted to all of the 911 Public Safety Regional Communication Centers for coordination of emergency response.
In support of operational safety and appropriate use, LifeFlight provided staff and helicopters for 17 Ground Safety User Courses with 290 participants. Supporting the chain of survival and with assistance from the LifeFlight Foundation, LOM provides physicians and clinical staff supporting continuing medical education. In FY2020 LifeFlight provided continuing clinical education and high fidelity simulation programs for 176 physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, and EMT's.
