Organizations Filed Purposes: Cornerstones of Science works with public libraries to create science programs that spark curiosity and foster a deeper understanding of the world around us.

WATER: NLM Cornerstones of Science Test The Waters Kits is a project that Cornerstones collaborated with the National Institutes of Health in conjunction with the National Libraries of Medicine (NLM) and All of Us programs to create a citizen science kit that engages families around the role and importance of safe drinking water. These kits are unique as they also provide audio files that allow visually impaired and blind users as well as people who speak different languages (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish and English) to successfully use the kits. Over 507 kits were developed and disseminated to six NLM regions and public libraries nationwide. In addition, Cornerstones provided two professional development training seminars for NLM one on highlighting the kit and the other on how to create a kit for the visually impaired and blind.

SCIENCE CENTERS: NASA@My Library is a 5 year grant-driven partnership with Space Science Institute, American Library Association, Lunar Planetary Society and others. In Year 4 of the grant, Cornerstones worked with 18 State library agencies to circulate over 225 kits for public libraries to use and host programs for patrons. In addition, Cornerstones in partnership with Northern Illinois University conducted a small research project on strategies to create increase patron interest development, around earth and space within three libraries in Arizona, North Carolina and Texas.

REV UP, 20TH ANNIVERSARY, BINOCULAR, CIRCULATING TRUNKS, TRUNK SALES & BUILDING CAPACITY, ONLINE RESOURCES AND GENERAL: Cornerstones of Science also supports public library abilities to provide ongoing access to informal science experiences thru the use of Science Trunks and REV Up Program. Using the library van system, public libraries can borrow science trunks (at no charge to them) and provide their patrons with public programming around a variety of science themes such as: bugs and butterflies; forensic science; health and wellness; earth and space science, to name a few. Cornerstones provides kit development services to other state libraries who are also interested in providing this service to their public libraries. Due to COVID-19, Cornerstones pivoted to provide libraries and food distribution sites accessible downloadable STEM enrichment activities, developed in collaboration with the Maine Department of Education, Summer Child Nutritional Program and Maine Campus Compact, through the REV Up program. Overall, all of the online resources were greatly enhanced, as part of our 20th Anniversary celebrations including a new website look, navigation and social media boosts to improve online awareness of Cornerstones history, products and services. Finally, through our General Programs, we are able to pilot an idea to determine if there are greater opportunities for the organization. One particular activity, was serving as a vendor at the New England Library Association Conference where we were well-received and won first place for a first time vendor.
