GOOD THEATER HAD AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR IN 2019. STRONG ATTENDANCE, RECORD DONATIONS AND EXCELLENT REVIEWS WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YEAR. THE YEAR BEGAN WITH THE MAIN STAGE PRODUCTION OF THE MAINE PREMIERE OF THE RECENT BROADWAY HIT, AN ACT OF GOD. THIS THREE CHARACTER PLAY FEATURED A WOMAN PLAYING GOD. THE COMEDY PROVIDED MUCH NEEDED LAUGHTER DURING THE WINTER WITH THE WEATHER COOPERATING SO WE ONLY HAD TO CANCEL ONE PERFORMANCE. WHILE AN ACT OF GOD WAS RUNNING ON THE MAIN STAGE, OUR SECOND STAGE SEASON FEATURED THE RETURN OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S SMASH HIT, LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE. THE SHOW DID NOT DO AS WELL AS IT HAD DURING ITS FIRST RUN, BUT STILL MANAGED TO DELIGHT AUDIENCES FOR A VERY RESPECTABLE RUN. IN FEBRUARY THE COMPANY PRESENTED THE PORTLAND PREMIERE OF THE RECENT BROADWAY TONY AWARD WINNING A DOLL'S HOUSE PART 2. THIS PLAY WAS ONE OF THE MOST PRODUCED PLAYS IN THE COUNTRY, AND GOOD THEATER'S A-LIST CAST DELIVERED AN EXCITING, THOUGHT PROVOKING PIECE. THE SECOND STAGE PRODUCTION RUNNING CONCURRENTLY WITH A DOLL'S HOUSE PART 2 WAS THE MAINE PREMIERE OF THE IRISH CURSE. THE IRISH CURSE HAD BEEN AN OFF-BROADWAY HIT. IT IS IRREVERENT AND ULTIMATELY VERY TOUCHING. THE SHOW GREW TO SELL-OUT AUDIENCES, AND WE HAD EXCEPTIONAL FEEDBACK FOR THE CAST AND THE PLAY. THE SHOW DOES CONTAIN STRONG LANGUAGE AND ADULT THEMES, BUT THE RESPONSE WAS OVERWHELMING, AND WE PLAN TO BRING THE SHOW BACK FOR ANOTHER RUN DURING OUR 20TH SEASON. GOOD THEATER RETURNED TO MUSICAL COMEDY, SOMETHING THAT HAD BEEN MISSING FROM OUR SEASONS FOR SIX YEARS, WITH LUCKY STIFF. THIS CHARMING, HAPPY MUSICAL WAS A GREAT ADDITION TO OUR SEASON AND OUR PATRONS RESPONDED WITH SOLD-OUT PERFORMANCES. AFTER OUR SUMMER HIATUS, GOOD THEATER KICKED OFF THE FALL WITH A FUNDRAISING GALA IN HONOR OF CO-FOUNDER, EXECUTIVE & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR BRIAN P. ALLEN'S, 60TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. THIS PERFORMANCE CONCERT/ROAST EVENT FEATURED A COUPLE OF BROADWAY VETERANS AND A HOST OF LOCAL GOOD THEATER REGULARS SINGING SONGS AND TELLING STORIES TO HONOR ALLEN. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS EVENT, GOOD THEATER BEGAN THE FALL SEASON WITH THE MAINE PREMIERE OF ADMISSIONS A RECENT OFF-BROADWAY HIT SHOW ABOUT RACE, PRIVILEGE AND ACADEMICS. IN LIGHT OF THE FELICITY HUFFMAN ADMISSIONS SCANDAL, THE SHOW COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE TIMELY, AND AUDIENCES FLOCKED TO THE PRODUCTION THAT RECEIVED RAVE REVIEWS. THE SECOND FALL SHOW WAS THE EAST COAST PREMIERE OF BOXES WRITTEN BY A MAINE-BASED PLAYWRIGHT. THE SHOW WAS A PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA WHERE THE TABLES GET TURNED AND THEN GET TURNED AGAIN. HAVING THE PLAYWRIGHT IN RESIDENCE AS WE BROUGHT THE SHOW TO PERFORMANCE ALLOWED FOR MINOR TWEAKS AND CHANGES TO THE SCRIPT THAT IMPROVED THE PRODUCTION. THE SECOND STAGE PRODUCTION THAT OPENED IN NOVEMBER WAS THE MAINE PREMIERE OF WHO'S HOLIDAY, A SATIRICAL PIECE ABOUT CINDY LOU WHO FROM HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. THE CHARACTER IS ALL GROWN UP AND THE PLAY IS PRESENTED IN RHYMED COUPLETS LIKE THE DR. SEUSS ORIGINAL. THIS PIECE TURNED INTO THE BIGGEST HIT OF THE YEAR WITH ALL PERFORMANCES SELLING OUT AS WELL AS ADDED PERFORMANCES ALSO SELLING OUT. GOOD THEATER WILL DEFINITELY BRING THIS PIECE BACK FOR A FUTURE PRODUCTION. THE YEAR ENDED WITH BROADWAY AT GOOD THEATER, THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISING CONCERTS DEVOTED TO A DECADE OF THE HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATER. THIS YEAR THE DECADE WAS THE 1940S. OVER 20 PERFORMERS INCLUDING ONE BROADWAY GUEST STAR OFFERED WHAT MANY CALLED THE BEST EDITION OF BROADWAY TO DATE. THE YEAR FEATURED THE MOST PERFORMANCES AND THE HIGHEST ATTENDANCE OF ANY YEAR IN THE COMPANY'S HISTORY. WITH THESE POSITIVE PRODUCTIONS AND GREAT REVIEWS, THE COMPANY ALSO SAW AN INCREASE IN DONATIONS.
