TO SUPPORT HEALTHY LANDS, WATER, AND COMMUNITIES IN MIDCOAST MAINE THROUGH CONSERVATION, OUTDOOR ADVENTURE, AND LEARNING.
LAND -PERMANENTLY PROTECTED 352 ACRES IN LIBERTY, NEWCASTLE AND JEFFERSON MAINE WITH PUBLIC ACCESS. -ASSURED 6,800 ACRES OF PRESERVES AND 6,242 ACRES OF CONSERVATION EASEMENTS MET HIGHEST STANDARDS FOR CONSERVED PROPERTY. -CONDUCTED TRAIL MAINTENANCE ON OUR 95 MILES OF TRAILS, AFTER DEVELOPING COVID-SAFE PROTOCOLS TO KEEP BOTH VOLUNTEERS AND STAFF SAFE.
WATER -COMPLETED 319 PHASE 1 GRANT THAT SUPPORTS PREVENTION OF NON-POINT SOURCE POLLUTION INTO DAMARISCOTTA LAKE. AWARDED PHASE 2 GRANT TO CONTINUE THE WORK THROUGH 2022. -MIDCOAST CONSERVANCY BEGAN DEVELOPING A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE TOWN OF CAMDEN TO FACILITATE THE MEGUNTICOOK RIVER WATERSHED RESTORATION AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE PROJECT IN THE SERVICE AREA OF COASTAL MOUNTAINS LAND TRUST, WHICH WILL SERVE AS A STAKEHOLDER TO REVIEW RESTORATION OPTIONS FOR THE MEGUNTICOOK RIVER. THE GOAL IS TO RESTORE THE HEALTH OF THE WATERSHED, INCLUDING FISH PASSAGE THAT WILL ULTIMATELY PROVIDE OVER 1,500 ACRES OF HABITAT FOR ALEWIFE AND OTHER SEA-RUN FISH SPECIES.
COMMUNITY -OPERATE HIDDEN VALLEY NATURE CENTER WITH 25 MILES OF TRAILS ON 1,000 ACRES, HOSTED A HANDFUL OF WORKSHOPS AND GUIDED PROGRAMS UNTIL THE START OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC ON MARCH 11. VISITORS UTILIZING THE TRAILS INCREASED AS PEOPLE LOOKED FOR PLACES TO SAFELY RECREATE OUTDOORS. DUE TO CDC RECOMMENDATIONS WE WERE NOT ABLE TO CAPTURE VISITOR REGISTRATIONS. WE SERVED 4 LOCAL SCHOOLS THROUGH FEBRUARY FOR LESSONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. EACH SCHOOL CAME FOR ONE LESSON EACH MONTH DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. - OUR FOUR TRAINED AMERICORPS OUTDOOR ADVENTURE PROGRAM MEMBERS CONTINUED TO FACILITATE FAT BIKE, XC SKIING & SNOWSHOEING PROGRAMING AT SCHOOLS THROUGHOUT LINCOLN AND WALDO COUNTIES UNTIL THE START OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC. WE MADE PROGRAMS MORE ACCESSIBLE TO STUDENTS BY TRANSPORTING GEAR TO SCHOOL SITES AND ASSISTING TEACHERS WITH PROGRAMMING AND GETTING KIDS OUTSIDE. WINTER PROGRAMS TOOK PLACE OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DAY AND WERE AVAILABLE TO ALL STUDENTS FREE OF CHARGE. AFTER THE PANDEMIC AND CLOSURE OF MOST IN PERSON SCHOOLING, THE AMERICORPS MEMBERS PRODUCED 9 VIDEO LESSONS FOR USE BY FAMILIES AND SCHOOLS ON ACTIVITIES THAT COULD BE DONE FROM HOME OR AT A LOCAL PRESERVE. -MIDCOAST CONSERVANCY LEASED APPROXIMATELY 125 SETS OF CROSS-COUNTRY SKIS TO FAMILIES IN LINCOLN AND WALDO COUNTIES.
