Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PROTECT THE WILD CHARACTER, NATURAL RESOURCES, AND SCENIC BEAUTY OF PIERCE POND WATERSHED AND PRESERVE TRADITIONAL PUBLIC RECREATIONAL USE OF THE AREA.

LAND PROTECTION MWWT WORKS COOPERATIVELY WITH OTHER WATERSHED LANDOWNERS TO CONSERVE THE WILDLIFE, WATER QUALITY, AND OTHER NATURAL RESOURCES OF THE PIERCE POND WATERSHED. MWWT HAS CONSERVED 10,500 ACRES AND OVER 30 MILES OF SHORELINE, THROUGH THE PURCHASE OF CONSERVATION EASEMENTS AND LAND. MWWT HAS ESTABLISHED AGREEMENTS WITH TWO SPORTING CAMPS TO ENSURE THE CONTINUED TRADITIONAL OPERATION OF THESE HISTORIC CAMPS. IN 2020 MWWT CONTINUED ITS EFFORTS IN SUPPORT OF ACQUISITION OF THE 6,800 ACRES OF WATERSHED LANDS THAT ARE CURRENTLY UNDER COMMERCIAL TIMBER MANAGEMENT - THE CORNERSTONE OF ITS LONG-TERM GOAL OF PERMANENTLY PROTECTING AND PROVIDING EXEMPLARY MANAGEMENT OF ALL WATERSHED LANDS. THE TRUST HAS ACCEPTED DONATION OF A ONE-ACRE PARCEL OF LAND THAT ABUTS THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL (AT) AND HARRISON'S PIERCE POND CAMPS. TRANSFER OF THE DEED IS EXPECTED IN 2021. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROPERTY FAR EXCEEDS ITS SMALL SIZE: IT INCLUDES FRONTAGE ON PIERCE POND STREAM, A SPECTACULARLY BEAUTIFUL AND PRISTINE STREAM, AND IS SURROUNDED BY CONSERVATION LAND.

STEWARDSHIP MWWT BOARD OF DIRECTORS OVERSEES A STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM THAT HELPS ENSURE THE CONTINUED RESPONSIBLE USE OF WATERSHED LANDS. THIS INCLUDES REGULAR INSPECTIONS OF EASEMENT PROPERTIES TO ENSURE COMPLIANCE WITH EASEMENT TERMS, AND PURCHASE OF INSURANCE TO COVER ANY NECESSARY ENFORCEMENT OF EASEMENT VIOLATIONS. IN 2020 MWWT CONTINUED WORK ON THE PIERCE POND WATERSHED TRAILS PLAN, WITH THE SUPPORT OF GRANT FUNDING AS WELL AS TRAIL VOLUNTEERS. THE THREE PONDS LOOP TRAIL, WHICH LEADS TO KILGORE, KING AND SPLIT ROCK PONDS, WAS COMPLETED. COMPRISING CLOSE TO FOUR MILES, THIS IS A HIGHLY SCENIC HIKE WITH OUTLOOKS OVER THE PONDS, INTERESTING ROCK FORMATIONS, DIVERSE FOREST TYPES, AND ALOT OF INTERESTING PLANT AND ANIMAL LIFE. THE ELEPHANT ROCK OVERLOOK TRAIL WAS ALSO COMPLETED. THE .9-MILE TRAIL (1.8 MILES ROUND- TRIP) BEGINS AT THE OTTER POND COVE ROAD IMMEDIATELY ACROSS FROM THE OTTER POND MOUNTAIN TRAILHEAD. IT CLIMBS STEADILY TO A PAIR OF LOOKOUTS TO THE SOUTH AND WEST PROVIDING DRAMATIC VIEWS OF ELEPHANT ROCK, LOWER PIERCE POND, AND THE BIGELOW RANGE. DONATED TRAILSIDE BENCHES WERE INSTALLED AT SCENIC OVERLOOKS. A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN WAS CONDUCTED FOR MATERIALS TO REPLACE THE PUBLIC DOCK AT LINDSAY COVE, WHICH WILL BE REBUILT IN 2021. THIS WILL IMPROVE THE EASE AND SAFETY OF PUBLIC ACCESS TO PIERCE POND. MWWT MADE ADDITIONAL REPAIRS AND UPGRADES TO OTTER POND COVE ROAD IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN PUBLIC ACCESS TO THE OTTER POND COVE CAMPSITE AND LANDING. FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS WERE MADE TO THE CARETAKER CABIN TO FACILITATE ON-SITE STEWARDSHIP.

EDUCATION THE MWWT BOARD'S 2018 VISION STATEMENT EXPRESSED AN INTENTION FOR THE TRUST TO ENGAGE IN PROGRAMMING IN A VARIETY OF AREAS, NOTABLY INCLUDING OUTDOOR EDUCATION FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS. IN 2020 THE TRUST CONDUCTED A SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE FOR AN OUTDOOR-EDUCATION PROGRAMMING PLANNING STUDY. THEN MWWT CONDUCTED A SUCCESSFUL SEARCH FOR A HIGHLY QUALIFIED CONSULTANT TO CONDUCT THE STUDY, AND WORKED ACTIVELY WITH THIS CONSULTANT ON WATERSHED-USER INTERVIEWS AND OTHER PLANNING RESEARCH. A PRELIMINARY REPORT ON EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING OPTIONS WAS PRESENTED TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS IN OCTOBER, WITH STUDY COMPLETION TARGETED FOR MARCH, 2021.
