HCA is a public charter school offering rigorous, personalized, project-based education to Maine students in grades 5-12.
HCA's mission is to create a community of creative thinkers, compassionate leaders, and effective problem solvers. Project-based and place-based experiences ground learners in the natural and human worlds and cultivate curiosity, integrity, and civic mindedness. We envision HCA students and alumni as champions of social justice, economic opportunity, and sustainability in our towns, state, country, and world.
HCA uses a project-based, place-based curriculum to engage all learners in grades 5-12. We work regularly with community partners in area farms, fisheries and forests. In 2019-20 HCA had 195 students and will add 10-20 students each year for the next three years until reaching a full size of 120 middle school age students and 160 high school age students. The school insists that all students can and must meet meaningful academic standards, develop strong habits of work, contribute to their community, and leave with a clear and realistic plan for post-secondary education.
