Organizations Filed Purposes:
To bring together people interested in the history of Islesboro, for the purpose of collecting, preserving, presenting and promoting materials related to the town's history and its role in local, regional, and national history. Materials of interest include printed and manuscript documents and records, paintings, photographs and moving images, maps, objects, artifacts and buildings associated with the history of Islesboro and its residents.The Society also seeks to preserve, promote and interpret the culture of Islesboro and its residents, by hosting, sponsoring, and supporting activities and events that celebrate that culture in all its various forms.
Maintenance and Operations of Building & Museum: During the year, no major replacement projects were carried out. $13,098 was spent and allocated to program services in regard to routine depreciation, maintenance, security and occupancy costs.
Historical Society Meetings, Lectures, Museum-Public, Genealogy and Collections: Public exhibitions are carried out by the museum. During the summer, when the museum is open to the public, meetings and lectures are conducted in the Islesboro Historical Society Building to inform residents and visitors of the history of the Island and its people. The Society has published 3 books on the islands history. In addition, an active program is conducted in the Genealogy and Collections Department. To complete the program, 200 man hours of volunteer time was used. A deducated computer and software enables visitors to conduct family research. An active program is conducted to engage the Islesboro Central School in learning about their island's history. Work was also completed on updating the society's web site and Facebook page. An estimated 1,000 people in the community and visitors to the island benefited from the department's efforts which were supported by 45 volunteers. Total expenditures for this program was $3,638.
Scholarship Program: The scholarship program established by the Islesboro Historical Society in 2013, continues with the award presented annually to an Islesboro High School graduate(s) interested in pursuing education at a secondary school/college. Student's performance in history courses is one of the factors considered by the scholarship committee. Names and addresses of the individual(s) can be obtained by contacting the Islesboro Historical Society. In 2019, $3,000 of scholarship money was awarded.
