To work as a community for clean and healthy lakes, ponds and streams in our watershed.
Road Management: To reduce polluted runoff, one of the biggest threats to water quality, 30 Mile supports towns and road associations in the management of their roads. Services include free training, technical assistance, road management plans, and securing funds from state, federal and foundation grants.In 2020, 30 Mile received $218,100 in grant funding to directly support two towns' costs for road construction projects. The full amount of this funding was paid by 30 Mile to the towns of Chesterville and Vienna for expenses incurred on these projects. None of this funding was retained by 30 Mile to cover operating costs. These construction projects protected the water quality in Parker Pond.
Invasive Plant Prevention and Management: Courtesy Boat Inspectors (CBIs) are the first line of defense in preventing plant fragments found hitchhiking on boats and trailers from entering our lakes. Our CBIs work at boat launches throughout the watershed conducting inspections and educating boaters about the threat of invasives. In 2020, we conducted 2,355 inspections. We also train and support teams of volunteers to survey our lakes and ponds for invasive plants. When invasive plants are found, we implement a rapid response, working in partnership with the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and Lake Stewards of Maine, to locate and remove the invasive plants.
Outreach: 30 Mile raises awareness about lake protection through its newsletters, website, social media, brochures, public lectures, workshops, presentations and more.
