Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE PURPOSE OF ACLU OF MAINE FOUNDATION IS TO ADVANCE AND PROTECT THE CIVIL LIBERTIES AND HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS PROVIDED UNDER THE CONSTITUTIONS AND LAWS OF THE STATE OF MAINE AND THE UNITED STATES. THE CORPORATION IS A NON-PARTISAN ORGANIZATION THAT USES LITIGATION, EDUCATION, COMMUNICATIONS, ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS, AND ADVOCACY TO ACHIEVE ITS PURPOSE
LEGAL PROGRAM - THE ACLU-ME'S LEGAL PROGRAM IS CENTRAL TO OUR CIVIL LIBERTIES WORK. THIS YEAR, WE PUSHED FOR INCREASED TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM CUSTOMS AND BORDER PATROL (CBP) WITH ONGOING PUBLIC RECORDS LAWSUITS. WE CONTINUED TO CHALLENGE YOUTH INCARCERATION. WE SETTLED A CASE WE BROUGHT ON BEHALF OF AN 11-YEAR-OLD CHILD WHO WAS BRUTALLY BEATEN BY GUARDS AT THE LONG CREEK YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER. WE FILED TWO AMICUS BRIEFS -- ONE AGAINST INCARCERATING YOUTH WHO ARE INCOMPETENT TO STAND TRIAL, AND ANOTHER ABOUT JUVENILE SENTENCING, WHICH LED TO A COURT VACATING A YOUNG PERSON'S SENTENCE. ADDITIONALLY, WE DEFENDED REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM. WE CONTINUED TO CHALLENGE A MAINE LAW THAT BARRED PEOPLE ON MEDICAID FROM USING GOVERNMENT-PROVIDED HEALTHCARE TO PAY FOR AN ABORTION, AND ANOTHER MAINE LAW THAT ONLY ALLOWED PHYSICIANS TO PERFORM ABORTIONS. ULTIMATELY, THE LEGISLATURE CHANGED THE LAWS, AND THE LAWSUITS WERE RESOLVED. FINALLY, WE CONTINUED DEFENDING CORE FIRST AMENDMENT ISSUES: WE FILED AN AMICUS BRIEF SUPPORTING MAINE'S LAW THAT BARS PUBLIC FUNDS FROM BEING USED AT RELIGIOUS SCHOOLS, AND WE BROUGHT A CASE DEFENDING STUDENT FREE SPEECH.
PUBLIC EDUCATION - THE ACLU-ME'S PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAM RAISES AWARENESS OF HOW THE CONSTITUTION'S PROTECTIONS IMPACT MAINER'S DAILY LIVES. THIS YEAR, WE HELD KNOW YOUR RIGHTS TRAININGS TO TEACH PEOPLE ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS WHEN INTERACTING WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS. WE ALSO PROVIDED EDUCATION THROUGHOUT THE YEAR ON HOW RECENT STATE LAW CHANGES AFFECTED MAINERS' CIVIL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES. EARLY IN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WE PROVIDED EDUCATION ON THE WAYS IN WHICH THE GOVERNMENT'S RESPONSE TO THE PANDEMIC COULD AFFECT CIVIL RIGHTS AND CIVIL LIBERTIES. ADDITIONALLY, WE PLACED OPINION PIECES IN MAINE PAPERS ABOUT INTERNET PRIVACY AND MEDICATION-ASSISTED TREATMENT IN JAIL, AND WE PARTICIPATED IN DOZENS OF SPEAKING OPPORTUNITIES ABOUT A BROAD RANGE OF CIVIL RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES ISSUES.
