Organizations Filed Purposes: THE IMMIGRANT LEGAL ADVOCACY PROJECT HELPS LOW-INCOME IMMIGRANTS IMPROVE THEIR LEGAL STATUS, AND WORKS FOR MORE JUST AND HUMANE LAWS AND POLICIES AFFECTING IMMIGRANTS.

AS MAINE'S ONLY STATE-WIDE IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES ORGANIZATION, ILAP SERVES AS A CATALYST FOR IMMIGRANTS WITH LOW INCOME TO GAIN LEGAL STATUS, ACHIEVE THEIR PERSONAL PLANS FOR SUCCESS, AND BRING ECONOMIC VITALITY TO THE STATE OF MAINE.

DIRECT LEGAL SERVICES: ILAP PROVIDES A CONTINUUM OF SERVICES BASED ON CLIENT NEEDS AND GOALS. FULL REPRESENTATION IS RESERVED FOR COMPLEX CASES THAT HAVE DIRE CONSEQUENCES AND ARE UNLIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITHOUT AN ATTORNEY. THE IMMIGRATION FORMS PROGRAM OFFERS CONSULTATIONS, BRIEF INTERVENTIONS AND APPLICATION ASSISTANCE TO INDIVIDUALS NAVIGATING THE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM. IN 2019, ILAP REPRESENTED 293 FULL REPRESENTATION CLIENTS AND SERVED 2,788 INDIVIDUALS IN THE IMMIGRATION FORMS PROGRAM. ILAP ALSO MAINTAINED A SUCCESS RATE OF GREATER THAN 97% IN CASES THAT REACHED A FINAL DECISION. ADDITIONALLY, 175 PRO BONO ATTORNEYS DONATED 4,014 HOURS OF THEIR TIME VALUED AT 1,032,536.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH: TO MAXIMIZE OUR REACH AND SUPPORT INDIVIDUALS THAT WE DO NOT HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REPRESENT, ILAP PROVIDES ACCURATE, ACCESSIBLE AND TIMELY INFORMATION ON COMPLEX LEGAL ISSUES TO IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES AND SERVICE PROVIDERS ACROSS THE STATE. AVAILABLE IN SEVERAL LANGUAGES, MATERIALS AND PRESENTATIONS AIM TO COUNTERACT INCOMPLETE OR INACCURATE INFORMATION AND PREVENT FUTURE COMPLICATIONS THAT MAY NEGATIVELY AFFECT LEGAL STATUS OR LEAD TO DEPORTATION. THESE ACTIVITIES HAVE BECOME PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS, AS MANY POLICIES HAVE CHANGED SWIFTLY AND SIGNIFICANTLY. IN 2019, WE HOSTED 81 EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH EVENTS FOR 2,180 INDIVIDUALS ACROSS THE STATE.

SYSTEMIC ADVOCACY: ILAP COLLABORATES WITH PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS AND IMMIGRANT-LED GROUPS ON SYSTEMIC ADVOCACY EFFORTS TO IMPROVE LAWS AND POLICIES THAT AFFECT IMMIGRANTS IN MAINE AND PREVENT THOSE THAT WOULD NEGATIVELY IMPACT IMMIGRANT COMMUNITIES. IN 2019, ILAP SERVED AS A SOURCE OF ACCURATE INFORMATION FOR THE MEDIA ON 57 OCCASIONS. KEY ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES INCLUDED CONTINUED OUTREACH RELATED TO THE HARMFUL "PUBLIC CHARGE" RULE CHANGE AND PASSAGE OF A BILL THAT GIVES ABUSED, NEGLECTED AND ABANDONED IMMIGRATION CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN MAINE A CLEARER PATHWAY TO ATTAINING LEGAL STATUS, FINDING STABILITY AND SAFETY, AND MOVING FORWARD WITH THEIR LIVES.
