INTERMEDIATE CARE FACILITY:SON VALLEY OPERATES THE ONLY PRIVATE, CHRISTIAN, INTERMEDIATE CARE FACILITY FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES (ICFIDD) IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI. THERE ARE TWO GROUP HOMES LOCATED ON 80 ACRES OF DONATED LAND IN MADISON COUNTY, JUST OUTSIDE OF CANTON. IN 2017, THE TWO HOMES HAD 20 RESIDENTS. RESIDENTS HELP WITH DUTIES AROUND THE HOUSES SUCH AS MAKING THEIR BEDS; WASHING, DRYING AND FOLDING CLOTHES; HELPING COOK MEALS; SETTING THE TABLE; AND CLEANING UP AFTER MEALS. THEY ALSO HAVE A LARGE TELEVISION IN THE LIVING ROOM WHERE THEY CAN HANG OUT AND WATCH THEIR FAVORITE PROGRAMS. THE PAVILION SERVES AS A PLACE FOR WATERMELON SEED SPITTING CONTESTS, ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTER, SPECIAL COOKOUTS, AND EVEN AS A TRIKE RIDING FACILITY. THE RESIDENTS ESPECIALLY ENJOY SHOOTING HOOPS WHEN THE WEATHER PERMITS!
SUPERVISED LIVING:SON VALLEY CURRENTLY OPERATES TWO HOMES AND SEVERAL APARTMENTS FOR SUPERVISED LIVING RESIDENTS. THE DIRECT CARE STAFF ARE WITH THE RESIDENTS 24/7 TO ENSURE THEIR SAFETY AND WELL BEING. THE RESIDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMPLETING HOUSEHOLD CHORES LIKE COOKING, CLEANING, AND DOING LAUNDRY. SON VALLEY ALSO OFFERS SUPPORTED LIVING FOR ADULTS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. THESE RESIDENTS LIVE IN AN APARTMENT AND ARE, FOR THE MOST PART, INDEPENDENT. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DAY-TO-DAY LIVING NEEDS SUCH AS COOKING, CLEANING, AND PERSONAL NEEDS. THE ORGANIZATION HAS STAFF AVAILABLE TO ASSIST THEM WHEN NEEDED. STAFF IS ALSO AVAILABLE TO THEM FOR THEIR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS. IN 2018, THERE WERE APPROXIMATELY 30 PARTICIPANTS IN THESE SERVICES.
COMMUNITY CENTER:THE SON VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER IS LOCATED IN RIDGELAND, MS. THE RESIDENTS FROM THE CANTON INTERMEDIATE CARE FACILITY, THE COMMUNITY LIVING RESIDENTS, ALONG WITH PATRONS FROM AROUND THE JACKSON METRO AREA COME TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER DAILY. THE FACILITY IS OPEN MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY AND IS CLOSED ON WEEKENDS. IN 2018, THE COMMUNITY CENTER PROVIDED SERVICES TO APPROXIMATELY 40 INDIVIDUALS. THE FIRST ACTIVITY OF THE MORNING IS A TIME OF BIBLE READING, PRAYER, AND SINGING. RESIDENTS AND PATRONS ARE VERY SINCERE ABOUT WORSHIP AND PRAYING FOR EACH OTHER AS WELL AS OTHERS. IF YOU HAVE A NEED AND A RESIDENT OR PATRON KNOWS ABOUT IT, WE CAN ASSURE YOU THAT YOUR NEED IS MENTIONED AS A PRAYER REQUEST. THERE IS AN ONGOING EDUCATION PORTFOLIO FOR EACH RESIDENT AND PATRON. RESIDENTS AND PATRONS ARE ACTIVELY TAUGHT VARIOUS VOCATIONAL SKILLS TO BETTER PREPARE THEM FOR AN ACTUAL COMMUNITY JOB. THESE SKILLS ARE LEARNED THROUGH TEACHING AND PRACTICE. THEY INCLUDE SORTING, STOCKING, JANITORIAL, FOLDING, AND IDENTIFYING, TO NAME A FEW. THE ORGANIZATION WORKS DILIGENTLY TO HELP RESIDENTS AND PATRONS FIND EMPLOYMENT IN THE COMMUNITY. IN 2018, THE ORGANIZATION HAD APPROXIMATELY 10 RESIDENTS AND PATRONS WHO ARE EMPLOYED BY BUSINESSES IN OUR COMMUNITY. SOME OF THOSE BUSINESSES INCLUDE PENN'S RESTAURANTS, MAZZIO'S, MALCO THEATER, AND MCALISTER'S DELI. RESIDENTS AND PATRONS ARE OFFERED THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO AND EXPERIENCE MANY DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS WITH SON VALLEY. OUTINGS AND ACTIVITIES INCLUDE SHOPPING TRIPS TO THE GROCERY STORE OR MALL, TOURS OF A LOCAL TELEVISION STATION, AND TRIPS TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT.
