Organizations Filed Purposes: FAMILIES AS ALLIES IS THE ONLY STATEWIDE ORGANIZATION RUN BY AND FOR FAMILIES OF CHILDREN WITH BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CHALLENGES IN MISSISSIPPI. WE SUPPORT EACH OTHER AND WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE THINGS BETTER FOR OUR CHILDREN. OUR WORK IS BUILT ON THREE PILLARS: SUPPORTING FAMILIES, SUPPORTING COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTING POSITIVE CHANGE. OUR CORE VALUES DEFINE US. WE VALUE EVERY CHILD AND FAMILY, EXCELLENCE, PARTNERSHIP AND ACCOUNTABILITY.

TO MAKE SURE THAT FAMILIES ARE PARTNERS IN THEIR CHILDREN'S CARE.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES:IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING DIRECT SUPPORT TO OVER 300 FAMILIES OF CHILDREN, WE ASSISTED WITH STRUCTURAL AND SYSTEMIC CHANGES SO THAT MORE FAMILIES RECEIVE THE TYPE OF SUPPORT THEY FIND MOST HELPFUL. WE EMBEDDED A FAMILY PARTNER INTO THE MISSISSIPPI WRAPAROUND INSTITUTE TO ASSIST WITH TRAINING OF AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO WRAPAROUND FACILITATORS WHO WILL WORK WITH THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES THROUGHOUT THE STATE. WE PRODUCED TWO AWARENESS VIDEOS THAT STRESS THAT EVEN YOUNG CHILDREN CAN HAVE EMOTIONAL CHALLENGES, CHILDREN CAN AND DO BETTER AND THAT THE BEST WAY TO HELP CHILDREN IS TO PARTNER WITH THEIR FAMILIES. ONE VIDEO FEATURED KATELYN BROWN, A MISS MISSISSIPPI FINALIST WHO DESCRIBED HER JOURNEY AS A CHILD AND YOUNG PERSON DEALING WITH ANXIETY AND THE OTHER VIDEO FEATURED JACKSON MAYOR, CHOKWE ANTAR LUMUMBA, AND HIS FAMILY. HE SHARED AS BOTH A YOUNG FATHER WANTING TO SUPPORT HIS CHILDREN'S DEVELOPMENT AND ALSO AS THE MAYOR OF JACKSON COMMITTED TO ALL OF JACKSON'S FAMILIES. WE PROJECT THAT THESE VIDEOS WILL TOUCH THE LIVES OF AT LEAST 20,000 FAMILIES OVER THE NEXT YEAR. WE INCREASED OUR SUPPORT OF FAMILIES OF YOUNG CHILDREN, INCLUDING THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH SPRINGBOARD TO OPPORTUNITY.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY:OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MISSISSIPPI WRAPAROUND INSTITUTE AND A NEW SYSTEM OF CARE COLLABORATION WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH ALLOWED US TO TRAIN 250 MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS IN FAMILY-DRIVEN PRACTICE AND EDUCATION ADVOCACY. MOST OF THESE TRAININGS INCLUDED FAMILIES RECEIVING SERVICES AS PRESENTERS OR PANELISTS. BY TRAINING PROVIDERS WHO ARE ALREADY WORKING WITH FAMILIES IN BASIC ADVOCACY SKILLS, WE GREATLY INCREASED THE NUMBER OF FAMILIES WHO CAN BE SUPPORTED. THIS ALLOWS US TO RESERVE MOST OF OUR ONE TO ONE WORK WITH FAMILIES FOR THOSE WITH THE MOST CHALLENGING NEEDS. AS WE DID THIS TRAINING, WE BEGAN COLLECTING DATA ON BARRIERS PROVIDERS EXPERIENCE TO FAMILY-DRIVEN PRACTICE. WE WILL USE THIS DATA TO INFORM FOLLOW UP TRAINING AND COACHING. WE ASSISTED IN EXPANDING PARENT PEER SUPPORT TO THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM THROUGH OUR WORK WITH THE MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH. WE ALSO ASSISTED IN ROLLING OUT THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI'S CHAMP TELEHEALTH PROJECT IN THE MISSISSIPPI DELTA AND COLLABORATED IN DEVELOPING THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT FOR IT.

SUPPORTING POSITIVE CHANGE:WE TRAINED 38 FAMILY MEMBERS TO SERVE ON POLICY COMMITTEES USING A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED LEADERSHIP TRAINING. WE ANTICIPATE THAT AS GRADUATES OF THE TRAINING JOIN POLICY COMMITTEES, LOCAL AND STATE POLICIES IN VARIOUS SYSTEMS MAY BECOME MORE FAMILY-DRIVEN, A POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT THAT COULD POTENTIALLY AFFECT THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES. TWO OF THE GRADUATES PRESENTED TO ABOUT SIXTY MEMBERS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S MENTAL HEALTH TASK FORCE, HELPING THEM UNDERSTAND HOW ENGAGING THE PEOPLE RECEIVING SERVICES IN POLICY DECISIONS MAKES OUR SERVICE SYSTEM MORE ROBUST AND ACCOUNTABLE. WE PARTNERED WITH THE HUMAN SERVICES RESEARCH INSTITUTE TO CONDUCT A STATEWIDE KINSHIP CARE NAVIGATOR FEASIBILITY STUDY AND ARE HOPEFUL THAT THE DATA WILL BE USED TO CREATE A MODEL OF SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES CARING FOR CHILDREN IN THEIR EXTENDED FAMILIES THAT WORKS FOR FAMILIES IN MISSISSIPPI. WE PRESENTED OUR MODELS FOR FAMILY-DRIVEN FISCAL MANAGEMENT AND USING DATA FOR FAMILY-DRIVEN PLANNING AT THE NATIONAL FEDERATION OF FAMILIES FOR CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE. FAMILIES AS ALLIES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, JOY HOGGE, WAS ONE OF FOUR WOMEN NAMED TO THE MISSISSIPPI BUSINESS JOURNAL'S LIST OF MISSISSIPPI'S TOP 30 CEOS IN 2019.
