Poverty Relief and Community Development in the Middle East
3rd Person Inc provided aid and relief to over 400 refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt. These efforts are designed to provide relief and aid in the short-term as employment and other income-producing opportunities are limited. In the long term, these efforts are geared towards development. 3rd Person is working with key national leaders to train, equip, and provide practical job skills that enable a person to find and acquire other income producing opportunities so that they can take care of themselves and their families. Our team in the Middle East regularly visits clients on a weekly or monthly basis, collecting information and bringing attention to other needs they have. In addition to providing the food, clothing, furniture, and other necessity items for clients and their families, 3rd Person also has volunteer medical staff that can help the client work through medical issues he or she has. 3rd Person provided medical care for 100 people in 2020, distributed thousands of dollars in food and household goods, and provided job training for 50 people. After initial assessments, the clients are invited to participate in ongoing job skills and counseling services provided by volunteer staff. Services were severely limited during 2020 due to COVID restrictions.
3rd Person Inc undertook several sports & health development projects through 2020. Under the direction of key national leaders and volunteer staff, the team engaged in training 175 clients (including youth) in impoverished communities in Leb., Egypt, and Jordan. These programs are designed to improve sports skills in the participants, teach them valuable life skills, and address health issues facing people in these communities. The participants meet up to 7 times per week for practices and tournaments and are given instruction time covering various topics like teamwork, selflessness, humility, dependability, etc. These programs have as stated long-term objectives to improve interpersonal relationship skills, decrease unhealthy choices, maintain education priorities, and help clients understand the root causes of poverty. 3rd Person saw an improved school retention rate when compared with others in the target community and decresed tobacco use among its clients. Programs were limited in 2020 due to COVID 19.
3rd Person is involved in a project designed to help the Syrian refugee population in the country. One of the primary problems plaguing that community is their lack of access to education in the host country system. As a result, there is a significant lack of development for pre-school and kindergarten students. They are behind in the system and will remain behind without intervention. 3rd Person is working with national leaders and teachers to help them provide educational opportunities for these vulnerable children There are 30 students engaged in the program and it has already proven to help the students be prepared for entry into the normal school system. COVID 19 significantly disrupted the continuation of this program throughout the year.
