TO PROMOTE AND PARTICIPATE IN ESTABLISHING A SYSTEM OF SERVICES AIMED AT INCREASING THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND HUMAN DIGNITY FOR RESIDENTS OF BOLIVAR COUNTY, MS AND OTHER ESTABLISHED AREAS.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS:IN THE FOUR EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS OFFERED AT ST. GABRIEL MERCY CENTER, 330 PERSONS WERE ENROLLED AND 8,332 INDIVIDUAL HOURS OF UTILIZATION OCCURRED DURING 2019.- GED CLASSES STARTED AUGUST 18, 2019 FOR THE FALL SEMESTER. THE PROGRAM STARTED WITH EIGHT STUDENTS IN ATTENDANCE (SEVEN RETURNING STUDENTS AND SIX NEW STUDENTS). COAHOMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE IN CLARKSDALE, MS, ADULT EDUCATION DEPARTMENT PROVIDES TABE TESTING ASSESSMENTS FOR STUDENTS (PRE AND POST). THE TABE PROCESS OFFERS DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PRACTICE TESTING TO FOLLOW TO BECOME EXAM READY. GED INSTRUCTORS ALSO WORK WITH THE DELTA EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY CENTER AT DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY, THE PROGRAM OFFERS VARIOUS WORKSHOPS ON EDUCATION AND PROVIDES FREE TESTING VOUCHERS FOR ALL THAT QUALIFY. THE CENTER IS HOPING FOR GOOD RESULTS IN THE TRAINING PROVIDED TO EACH STUDENT IN COMPLETING THEIR GED REQUIREMENTS.- THE COMPUTER LEARNING LAB REPORTED 378 UNDUPLICATED PERSONS UTILIZING COMPUTERS FOR 2,692 HOURS LEARNING BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS, APPLYING FOR JOBS, TAKING ON-LINE COLLEGE COURSES, COMPLETING SCHOOL PROJECTS, UPDATING RESUMES, AND GED STUDENTS PRACTICING FOR THEIR EXAMS AND IMPROVING THEIR TYPING SKILLS. THE COMPUTER LAB HAD 1,101 PARTICIPANT DAYS, WHICH TOTALED 2,730 HOURS OF USAGE FOR THE YEAR. THE SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM CHILDREN ALSO HAD COMPUTER LAB TIME DOING MATH GAMES AND READING STORIES.- THE SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM IS HELD FROM JUNE TO JULY INFLUENCING SECOND TO SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS FOUR DAYS PER WEEK. TWO COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY AND/OR THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PLAN AND TEACH THE CHILDREN IN THE PROGRAM. THE CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT TECHNIQUES OF HEALTHY EATING AND LIVING, THE EFFECT HUMANS HAVE ON THE ENVIRONMENT, WORLD CULTURE AND HISTORY, CREATIVE EXPRESSION, AND FINALLY ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND FINANCE. FUN ACTIVITIES ARE INCORPORATED FOR EACH LESSON, SUCH AS MAKING SLIME, BAKING VARIOUS DESERTS, DERIVING OTHER WORDS FROM A CHOSEN "WORD FOR TODAY", MUSIC INTERPRETATION, EXERCISING YOUR MIND WITH HAND COORDINATION, AND A FIELD TRIP AT THE END.- SEWING CLASSES ENROLLED SEVEN STUDENTS THIS YEAR WITH FOUR ACTIVE SEAMSTRESSES (INCLUDING THE COORDINATORS). THE STUDENTS LEARN THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF SEWING (MACHINE USAGE, LAYING PATTERNS, THE CORRECT GUIDE TO CUTTING MATERIAL AND DESIGNING GARMENTS) FROM BEGINNING TO ADVANCED TECHNIQUES TWO DAYS PER WEEK. THE DELTA BOUTIQUE RECORDED SALES OF TWENTY-FOUR HAND-MADE GARMENTS AND/OR ACCESSORIES.
HEALTH PROGRAMS:IN THE TWO HEALTH PROGRAMS 74 PEOPLE ENROLLED WHICH ENTAILED 3,756 HOURS OF PARTICIPATION.- SENIOR OUTREACH PARTICIPANTS ENJOYED A DAILY HEALTHY LUNCH (856 MEALS), SOCIALIZATION THROUGH ARTS AND CRAFTS, GAMES, MOVIES, EXERCISE, FIVE SPEAKERS, AND TEN FIELD TRIPS. A TOTAL OF 6,336 MILES WERE TRAVELED TRANSPORTING SENIORS TO/FROM HOME AND ON FIELD TRIPS. THE PROGRAM ENJOYED FIVE SPEAKERS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR; TOPICS INCLUDED INFORMATION ON HEALTHY LIVING DURING AGING, STIMULATING YOUR MIND, CHAIR EXERCISES, DEMENTIA, MUSIC, AND CRAFT MAKING.- PARENTS AS TEACHER EDUCATORS MONITOR PARENTS' RELATIONSHIP WITH THEIR CHILDREN (AGE BIRTH TO THREE YEARS) TO TEACH THEM THAT THEY ARE THE CHILD'S FIRST AND BEST TEACHER. FIFTY-FOUR PARENT FAMILIES CURRENTLY PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDES SIXTY CHILDREN THAT ARE VISITED ON A MONTHLY BASIS. THERE WERE 720 FAMILY VISITS CONDUCTED DURING THE YEAR WITH 5,044 ITEMS (BOARD BOOKS, CLOTHES, FOOD, TOYS) OF ASSISTANCE WAS GIVEN TO FAMILIES. MONTHLY EDUCATIONAL GROUP MEETINGS WERE HELD FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN. DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS ARE DONE AT DESIGNATED AGES ON EACH CHILD.
SOCIAL SERVICE:IN THE SOCIAL SERVICE PROGRAM (EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM) 344 FAMILIES WERE INTERVIEWED, OF THAT, 80 FAMILIES WERE FINANCIALLY ASSISTED (54 OF THESE WERE ASSISTED FOR THE FIRST TIME) TOTALING 424 INDIVIDUAL FAMILY MEMBERS RECEIVING ASSISTANCE. TWELVE FAMILIES WERE REFERRED TO OTHER AGENCIES OR PROGRAMS FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE. ST. GABRIEL MERCY CENTER PARTNERS WITH MISSISSIPPI FOOD NETWORK PROVIDING FOOD TO OVER 250 FAMILIES ON A MONTHLY BASIS. TWO THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED SIXTY (2,760) BAGS OF FOOD WERE DISTRIBUTED DURING THE YEAR. THE ST. GABRIEL CLOSET (THRIFT STORE) WAS OPEN 235 DAYS DURING THE YEAR FOR ANYONE IN THE COMMUNITY TO COME A PURCHASE ITEMS AT A MINIMAL COST. ONE HUNDRED FIFTY INDIVIDUALS VOLUNTEERED AT THE CENTER AND WORKED IN THE COMMUNITY. A TOTAL OF 6,326 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SERVICE WAS PROVIDED TO THE COMMUNITY AND ST. GABRIEL MERCY CENTER FROM INDIVIDUALS AND/OR GROUPS THAT ST. GABRIEL HOSTED DURING THE YEAR.IN CONCLUSION, 2,970 PERSONS VISITED ST. GABRIEL FOR COPIES, FAXES, TOURS, TELEPHONE USAGE, AND MEETINGS.
