THE ARC OF MISSISSIPPI WAS FOUNDED TO INCLUDE ALL CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH COGNITIVE, INTELLECTUAAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES IN EVERY COMMUNITY. WE FOCUS ON ABILITIES, RESPECT, CHOICE FOR ALL AND ENCOURAGE ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP AND INCLUSION IN EVERY COMMUNITY.
THE ORGANIZATION HOSTED A 4 WEEK SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES CALLED "CAMP BOLD". INDIVIDUAL WEEKS ARE FOCUSED ON CAMPERS OF A PARTICULAR AGE GROUP. CAMPERS ARE PAIRED WITH A COUNSELOR SO THEY ARE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A TRADITIONAL CAMP ENVIRONMENT AS A TEAM. CAMP VOLUNTEERS AND COUNSELORS INCLUDE HIGHLY QUALIFIED SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS, ASSISTANTS, AND BEHAVIOR SPECIALISTS, AS WELL AS,MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COUNSELORS. ACTIVITIES INCLUDE ART, MUSIC, INFLATABLES, WATER ACTIVITES, RECREATION AND CUP CAKE DECORATING.
THE JOB READINESS PROGRAM TEACHES EMPLOYABLE-AGED INDIVIDUALS WITH INTELLECTUAL AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES ESSENTIAL SKILLS IN A WORK ENVIRONMENT. WEEKLY CLASSES, WORKSHOPS AND PRACTICE WORK EXPERIENCES DEVELOP SKILLS FOR SUCCESS. THE ARC NWMS PARTNERS WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES TO EMPLOY OUR PARTICIPANTS AND ALLOW THEM TO FURTHER DEVELOP THESE SKILLS.
OPERATION COMMUNITY OUTREACH EDUCATES OUR COMMUNITY IN OUR PROGRAMS. THE ANNUAL IPAD TRAINING GIVES AWAY 25 IPADS TO LOCAL SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS WHO PARTICIPATE IN OUR PROGRAMS. THE AUTISM LAW ENFORCEMENT COALITION TRAINING EDUCATES FIRST RESPONDERS IN THE BEST PRACTICES FOR INTERACTING WITH INDIVIDUALS WITH AUTISM AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES. THIS TRAINING WAS PRESENTED 5 TIMES IN 2019. WE ALSO PRESENTED 2 COMMUNITY WIDE CELEBRATIONS OF ARC IN THE PARK AND BLUE BLOCK PARTY TO BRING TOGETHER FAMILIES FROM THE DISABILITY COMMUNITY WITH OTHERS IN A SAFE AND FUN ENVIRONMENT.
